Parent-Teacher Conferences and Valuable School-Home Partnerships
Dear Salisbury Academy Parents:

Parent-teacher conferences begin this week and bring with them opportunities for developing and growing the important partnership between school and home. The conference is a vital component that will lead to the many exchanges that will occur between parents and teachers throughout the school year and beyond.

Our desire is to see each student reach their full potential during their time with us. With that in mind, I wanted to share some things you can consider this week for conferences.

1) Trust the teacher. These are talented, experienced professionals who are invested in a student-oriented process. They are going to observe and see things that you probably don't always see at home. Likewise, they need your feedback as the parent to help each student reach their potential. They benefit from learning more about the things they don't see at school.

2) Celebrate Growth. Schools are focused on helping young people grow and improve. We wouldn't be in business if students entered our classrooms as fully formed experts. There is a lot of work we do during the 10 years between Pre-Kindergarten and 8th grade year. We help students become creative and critical thinkers, but also good and ethical people. This means we are going to draw attention to those "teachable moments" in life that propel growth. In my experience, most "teachable moments" stem from something that was hard to face. To promote resiliency, we actually want some of these hard learning moments to happen when we are young, rather than as adults.

In other words, struggle can be a really good thing for young people to confront, particularly when their teachers and parents help them process those moments and provide them that unconditional support that is so critical to forming a healthy self-image.

3) Understand that improvement takes time. We all need to be patient. In a world that changes in just seconds, we must remember that learning and intellectual development is a slower process. Every child is on an intellectual journey, and his or her rate of travel varies. The teachers will have strategies and suggestions that you can follow and will help your child address areas of challenge. Intentionally missing from those strategies is constantly pressuring a child.

4) Review what you learned from the teachers with your child. Sit down and have a conversation. Empower your child to take responsibility for her or his learning. Encourage children to set goals for what they might do to continue to grow and take advantage of the tremendous learning opportunities at SA.  The conclusions should not be "work harder" or a setting a goal of "getting higher grades." Rather, focus on the process of learning: being diligent about getting homework done; establishing a goal to share more in class; or endeavoring to meet with a teacher once a week during help time.  I find that when kids do their homework, engage with their teachers, seek extra help, and participate in class, improvement happens naturally.

We are so thankful for our home-school partnerships and look forward to working together to help each child experience growth and celebrate success.

Warm Regards,

Beverly Fowler, Head of School

Gratitude Chapel and Outdoor Space Dedication
Salisbury Academy expressed gratitude to our supporters and celebrated the new SA Outdoor Learning and Play Space in Thursday's gratitude chapel and outdoor space dedication. The symbolic cutting of the ribbon represented a successful campaign brought to fruition through the support of many parents and community supporters. Thank you to everyone who played a part!

To begin the morning, Reverend Rod Kerr served as key speaker in a chapel gathering focused on Salisbury Academy's November virtue of gratitude.

Encouraging the school community to develop an attitude of gratitude, Kerr emboldened the audience saying, "Do something unnatural, consider something unthinkable, pray something unending, express gratitude unconditionally, and turn Thanksgiving into action."  Dare to be kind when it's easier to hate, and dare to be thankful even in the face of hardship, Kerr urged.

Kerr then gave the audience a chance to express gratitude to the outdoor space donors in a joyful standing ovation for the supporters.

Moving onto the outdoor dedication portion of the morning, students played happily in the outdoor space as Mrs. Fowler, members of the Rowan County Chamber of Commerce, trustees, and donors officially dedicated the SA Outdoor Learning and Play Space.
