NEW IBERIA, La. ---
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette will hold a James Lee Burke symposium featuring speaker Carrol Spell, Jr. on Saturday, April 4 at the Iberia Parish Library in New Iberia during the Books Along the Teche Literary Festival

Spell grew up in Abbeville, La. and now resides in Milton, La. He received his Juris Doctor degree from Louisiana State University in 1978. For nine years he served as an assistant district attorney in Lafayette Parish and has been in private practice since 1979. Since 2003 he has maintained his office as a general practice attorney in Milton. Spell is also a James Lee Burke fan.
It is this familiarity with Acadiana, Burke’s books, and his legal experience that Spell will bring to his presentation. He will address Dave Robicheaux and Louisiana's legal landscape in his presentation.
"Robicheaux would challenge any defense attorney and give a prosecutor ample material were he ever brought to trial," said Spell, in conversation.
The presentation will be at 10 a.m. on April 4 in the Iberia Parish Library's main branch (445 E. Main St.) and is free to the public with limited seating. The symposium promises to be an interesting reflection on Robicheaux from a man who knows Dave’s territory and the legal system. Th

With a focus on Great Southern Writers, the festival highlights Iberia Parish authors and others who write about the unique culture of Louisiana. Events include cooking demonstrations, workshops on writing, book fair, academic symposiums, receptions, poetry, music, live oak walk, movie screenings, children's activities, readers theater and more. Participants can learn Cajun dancing or how to play bouree, and tour the areas described in the Dave Robicheaux novels.
