Martin Luther King Jr. Day is this Monday, Jan. 15 (also coincides with his 95th birthday), with celebrations and observances taking place all this weekend to honor Dr. King's legacy and call to service. I encourage you to participate in some way this year, whether it is volunteering, attending an event or reflecting on the importance of equity and opportunity for all members of our community. Activities in our area include:
Saturday, Jan. 13
MLK Community Service Projects Hosted by Reston Community Center
From 9 a.m. to noon, you can participate in volunteer activities including making lunches for the Embry Rucker Shelter (2023 photo), or outdoor cleanup at the Cathy Hudgins Community Center at Southgate, 12125 Pinecrest Road, Reston. Saturday, Jan. 13
Reston Community Orchestra Tribute to Dr. King
This musical tribute takes place at 4 p.m. at Reston Community Center Hunters Woods,
2310 Colts Neck Rd., Reston. The program features students from Al Fatih Academy and Alia Waheed, along with overtures by Scott Joplin and Joseph Bologne. You will also hear songs and spirituals known and loved by Dr. King. Tickets are $18-25. Learn more.

MLK Service and Learning Day
The Park Authority is hosting a MLK Service and Learning Day at Frying Pan Farm Park, 2709 West Ox Road, Herndon at 10:30 a.m. Participants will rotate through stations to hear about the Civil Rights Movement, participate in a service project, and reflect on the power of community cooperation. Visit Great Falls Park
The National Parks Service is waiving entrance fees for national parks in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It is a great opportunity to spend some time outdoors at one of the most beautiful locations in Fairfax County. Learn more.
