Message from President Sara Beacham

Greetings!
A girl was born in Massachusetts in 1858. In 1900, she was living in Chico making a living as a schoolteacher. And, in 1993, a Chico elementary school was named after the prominent female educator. In 1930, she was a charter member of the Chico chapter of Soroptimist International and was sworn in as its first president. That girl was named Emma Wilson.
This week our club celebrates 92 since that day when the Chico chapter of Soroptimist International was chartered. I wonder what Emma Wilson would think of our club today. Are we meeting her expectations? Can we do more? Of course, I think we are doing amazing things. I also think there is always room for more. I hope we each take a moment to reflect on how we as individuals can further our mission of improving the lives of women and girls by helping them gain access to education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment.
As part of our birthday celebration, the events committee has a lot in store for us, and I can hardly contain my excitement. I hear there are going to be games, a slideshow, music, and maybe even cupcakes! I wonder if they can get a real live elephant to make an appearance?? Maybe not, but it is sure to excite each and every one of us. We should have a great turn out, including some visitors from other clubs. Our club, along with SI Bidwell Rancho, will be receiving a Proclamation from the city of Chico from the Vice Mayor on Wednesday in honor of Soroptimist International’s 100 years of service to women and girls.
So, get your hair and nails done, put on your biggest smiles (under our masks), and get ready to celebrate our birthday. Here’s to the next 92 years and counting!
See you Wednesday!
President Sara

Now for a SOLT minute:
There were 27 members when Soroptimist International of Chico was founded on January 11, 1930. The Exchange Club hosted a dinner to recognize SI Chico as the first women's service organization in Chico.
Economic hard times were a good fit to the service goals of the club, including:
- Christmas baskets for the needy
- adopting families at Christmas
- emergency assistance to provide dental care and eyeglasses
- a loan fund for students at the Chico Normal School
- sewing dresses for needy girls
- milk fund subsidy for Rosedale School
- founding sponsor of the Cedars playground,

Governor Sarah's Message
Hello,
I am happy to report that we are moving full steam ahead on conference planning. Wanted to share with you how my work is going.
Seriously, please note, registration for conference will open at the end of January. Please do not confuse registering for conference with the hotel room reservations we are asking people to do. We are looking at the hotel rooms being booked as an indicator as to whether people are going to attend conference. Remember if we do not get rooms booked, we will have a problem in meeting the financial obligations under the Conference contract with the Atlantis. I would like to implore members to make their own hotel reservation. I ask that you book your own room, rather than one member booking multiple rooms.
We also have many deadlines coming up that are related to conference. Please know that conference is 3 weeks earlier than in past years and our Committee Coordinators have a shorter time frame for judging the various award submissions. Please get your submissions in as early as possible to allow the Committee Coordinators more time to complete their work.
Part of putting conference together is having many phone calls and discussions. I have to say this is the best part in my serving as Governor of the Region. The creativity of our membership is very impressive. We are going to have fun at conference, I promise if you do not laugh at some point within the three days, come see me and I will seriously consider giving you a refund on your meals. We will take care of some Region business, vote in the Region board for the next biennium, celebrate some fantastic women who are pursuing their education while being the sole support their families, and all the while making up for 2 years of not seeing each other. Talk about multi-tasking! It will be a great time for all. I cannot wait to see all of you in person. I do want to ask, if any member is interested in being a conference sponsor, please give me a call at (775) 544-3733.
Best,
Governor Sarah

I will not be bringing clothing to every club business meeting in the future. I plan to set up display about every 3 months and will give you advance notice in the eblast.
If you wish to purchase an item, please text me at 530 520 3282 (include your name please) and let me know what clothing you are interested in buying. I am happy to set up a meeting at my home or yours to help you with purchase.
I hope you will continue to support our internal fundraising effort by purchasing soroptimist clothing. Thank you very much.

January Fur Baby and Member of the Month - Chai and Carla Bee
Meet Chai our 6 year old Apple Head Chihuahua.
She’s obviously a special little girl, who enjoys her walks through Bidwell Park, traveling with us in the RV and snuggling anytime she can. She’s very timid and doesn’t take to strangers at all. Which makes her a ferocious watch dog. LOL
When we’re not traveling in our RV, my partner Don & I enjoy kayaking, biking and just enjoying the outdoors.
I joined Soroptimist 3 years ago. I thoroughly enjoy the women I’ve met and strongly support the mission of supporting women and girls here locally and internationally.

Dress a Girl update…. We plan to get together at Cathy’s Sew&Vac as soon as it’s safe (those nights are so fun & productive!), but with the recent wave of Covid in Butte County, we feel it would be safer to start by individually making some dresses at home.
Let’s get started!
Please let us know how many dress kits you’d like (or if you have supplies to make them on your own, we can send you the instructions).
If you have extra fabric to donate to this worthwhile project (or if you know any seamstresses/quilters), they are always welcomed!
