Message from President Billie Araiza
|
|
Greetings!
I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather we had over the weekend. It was absolutely gorgeous outside! I opened all the windows and let the fresh air in. It was so cleansing, for the house and for my soul. I spent the weekend doing yard work and baking with the windows open. I now feel rejuvenated and ready to take on the next 6 months of my Soroptimist Club Presidency.
This week, we will be filling the three positions on the Nominating Committee. I’m thrilled to announce, Amy Louis has graciously accepted a position on the Nominating Committee, as the committee member, selected by the Club President. Our Board members will select an additional committee member at our Monday Board Meeting. Then membership will choose one more additional committee member, for a total of 3 Nominating Committee Members. The 3 person committee, will recommend the slate of officers for next year, which will be presented to the club in March and voted on at the April Business Meeting. I will announce who the Board selected and then ask for nominations for one additional member, from our membership, at our Wednesday Club Meeting.
I hope everyone can join us on Zoom this Wednesday. Our guest speaker will be from OLLI and she will be sharing what OLLI is all about. If you’re not familiar with OLLI, you definitely don’t want to miss our Wednesday meeting. Last week we celebrated our SI Chico Clubs 91st birthday and Vice President, Kathy, hosted the celebration. A BIG thank you to Kathy for putting together our birthday celebration! I know Zoom certainly isn’t the same as celebrating in person but it was still fun and everyone had a chance to learn a little Soroptimist history playing Trivia with Sara.
I’m grateful for all of you and all that you do to make our SI Chico club a success! l will see you Wednesday on Zoom.
With Gratitude,
President Billie

LIVE YOUR DREAM (2020-2021) First Place winner – Katie Cook
|
Meet Katie, Live Your Dream first place winner for 2020-2021
Katie is a hard-working mother of a beautiful 18 month old little girl. She works full-time in the medical billing industry as well as attending Butte College full time. She is working towards providing a stable and happy home for herself and her daughter with her declared major of Medical Office Administration and Medical Coding.
Katie said that when she got pregnant, she realized that she needed to get her life together, not only for her daughter, but for herself as well. After her daughter was born, she enrolled in Butte College and is scheduled to graduate in the spring of 2022.
The first thing I noticed about Katie was her fabulous smile, as well as her engaging and open manner. I was not surprised that references describe Katie as genuine, hardworking, professional, reliable, a good role model, resilient, compassionate and kind. She is definitely all of those.
Katie really appreciates the $1,500 that comes along with this award, as child-care for her daughter is very expensive. She said this grant will really help to augment her budget.
A couple of interesting things, Katie was referred to SI Chico’s Live Your Dream awards by a Soroptimist member in San Diego who is a friend of a friend. Also, her older sister received a Soroptimist scholarship from SI Chico over 25 years ago.
We will be celebrating Katie, as well as our other two Live Your Dream awardees at our regularly scheduled meeting on April 21. Hopefully all three of our amazing 2020/2021 winners will be able to be present on Zoom. If they are not available, we will have pictures and short videos.
Thank you for the opportunity to chair the Live Your Dream awards this year. It is always a privilege to meet these amazing young women.
