Oh, so that’s why people are acting
Sooo crazy!

4,700 incidents of violence on airplanes the majority over mask requirements.  Family members committed to bizarre conspiracy theories like a dead Presidents will return to Dallas, Texas to lead a revolution.  Thousands upon thousands of incidents of off the rails screaming crazy attacks of restaurant servers, health care workers, school board members for trying to do their jobs in a chaotic time.

Why?  Yes, we all know everyone is stressed out with all that the pandemic has thrown at us.  The losses and constant changing guidelines, schooling kids from home, lost jobs and anxiety episodes that never seem to end are awful.

But none of that really explains all that we are experiencing.  About a year prior to the beginning of the pandemic Susan and I went to hear a lecture by three-time Pulitzer Prize winning author Thomas Friedman at UC Santa Barbara.  He was hawking his new book “Thank you for being Late”.  As he was talking about his book, he cited research that stated we had past the point where the average person could handle the amount of change going on in the world 5 years ago.

To which I said “WHAT?!”  Being in the change coping business for the last 40 years that really stuck with me, but I didn’t really know what to do with the information.  Fast forward 8 years to today.  I watched a QAnon documentary.  Buried in all the “crazy” was several statements about what QAnon devotees want from the cult is certainty in a world where nothing is certain for more than an hour.  For those individuals that Friedman was referencing a coo-coo conspiracy theory provides “certainty” no matter how “tin foil hat” the theories are.  QAnon tells people exactly what’s going to happen, when and who to blame for it.

This reminds me of a basic bit of research I studied when I was in Grad School in 1971.  It took rats and shocked them, so they had to jump across a 2-foot chasm and jump into one of two doors. The experimenter made it uncertain which door would be open and which would be locked.  The uncertainty at some point becomes so overwhelming that the rats would jump at the same door over and over even when the experimenter made that door permanently locked and they would fall the two feet into the net every time.  (Hint: rats hate falling).  They would rather have “false certainty” even if it causes guaranteed pain. True for some people too it appears. (By the way this experiment is no longer being done as it is seen as cruel).

Consider all the things that these two bits of research would explain if we are simply past people’s ability to cope with the amount of change and the baffling complexity in the world when they desire simple certainty.  All the bad choices all the terrible decision-making, ascribing to totally nuts conspiracy theories.

Change needs a villain.  (The is my new catch phrase.) For all the people who cannot accept the current uncertainty of the world they MUST have someone to blame:  their server at the restaurant, flight attendant or just someone who doesn’t look like them.  Despots and dictators have used this reality for millennia.  “Bad people are destroying your life it’s not your fault”; not “hey, you need to cope better with change let me help you.” Minorities (of color or religion), immigrants, and women are the villains you can blame your problems on.  Or perhaps, a different political party.

If you know you have passed your point of being able to cope alone; if you notice that every new variant throws you back to the level of anxiety of the beginning of the pandemic, Susan and I are offering an option.  5 hours of remote one on one consultation time for $3,000.  If you have been through Managing Corporate Change© the cost is $2,500.  I have recently done this with a graduate with great results.  This offer is limited to 5 graduates. Respond immediately if you want one of the slots.

As always, we invite your comments.

NOTE: We have added a compressed session on Managing Corporate Change© Feb 28, March 2, 4 8:30 AM- 12:30 PM Pacific time each day.
Cost $2,750
