Jan. 24, 2024

Neighbors,

I was disappointed this afternoon to see that casino bill SB 675, which adds Fairfax County to the list of localities eligible to host a casino in the Commonwealth and to locate the casino in Tysons, was approved by the Senate Committee on General Laws and Technology by a vote of 10-4. It was referred to the Senate Finance Committee and then would go to the Senate floor.

As I noted in my letter yesterday to State Senator David Marsden, opposition to the casino proposal is widespread and growing quickly across northern and central Fairfax County (and beyond Hunter Mill District) – including the Vienna Town Council, the Greater Tysons Citizens Coalition, the Tanglewood Community Association, the Greater Tysons Green Civic Association, the Reston Citizens Association, the Hunter Mill Defense League, the Great Falls Citizens Association, the Sully District Council of Citizens Associations, the Western Fairfax Council of Civic Associations, the McLean Citizens Association, and more political groups such as Herndon-Reston Indivisible, and the Dulles Area Democrats. These groups represent thousands of concerned and active neighbors.

My office, other Board offices, as well as our General Assembly delegation have also received several hundred emails from residents who do not want a casino in our community. In addition, a group of concerned Hunter Mill District residents went to Richmond this morning to attend the committee meeting to voice their opposition to the bill. You can watch the NBC4 coverage here (photo). I am a well-known supporter of public engagement and I appreciate everyone's efforts!

Your voice is important in determining what happens in our community – please continue to use it! I will continue to keep you updated on the status of this bill in Richmond.

Regards,

Walter
