Message from President Billie Araiza
Greetings!

Thank you to everyone who attended Wednesday’s club meeting. A “HUGE” thank you to Rosie Potestio for jumping in and saving the day. She did a fabulous job sharing the OLLI program with us when our scheduled guest speaker didn’t show. You saved the day, Rosie! We are so lucky to have so many talented and knowledgeable members in our club.

I delivered the $5,000 check to ARC of Butte County last Wednesday after our club meeting. They were absolutely thrilled to receive it. With the money they received from the Power of 100 Women and the donation from us, they are well on their way to reaching their goal. They need around another $15,000 to remodel the Playground to make it accessible for children of all abilities.

The Nominating Committee positions have been filled. Please give a shout out to Amy Louis, Bonnie Chapman, and Carol Burr for serving on this year’s Nominating Committee. They will be recommending the nominations for next year’s slate of officers. If you are interested in serving on next year’s Board, please reach out to Amy, Bonnie, and Carol to let them know. All members are welcome to nominate someone else or themselves for next year’s slate of officers. The Nominating Committee will be announcing who they recommend at our March Business Meeting. This will also be the time for any additional nominations to come from the floor. Then the Club members will vote on the slate of officers at the April Business Meeting. Please mark these dates on your calendar so you don’t miss those meetings.

The old Soroptimist sign has been replaced on the Welcome to the city of Chico sign on Highway 99 on the Southside of Chico. The other two signs coming into Chico from the North and West sides will be replaced soon. More updates to come on those.

Hopefully, everyone received the Signup Genius email for Linda Allen. If you would like to sign up to deliver a meal to Linda and Gayle, please be sure to sign up now. If you didn’t receive the email for some reason, you can find the link in our E-blast.

There is no Wednesday club meeting this week but please join us this Thursday, January 28th on Zoom at 7 pm, for the Celebration of Life for our beloved friend and Soroptimist sister, Bev Rozendaal.

With Gratitude,

President Billie

Soroptimist International of Chico donated $5,000 to The Arc Butte County to refurbish, renovate, and improve the playground so it is accessible to children of all abilities.

Protecting the Health and Safety of Members and Those Around Us – ACTION NEEDED

Dear Clubs Leadership and Members,

Your SIA Board held an emergency board meeting on January 7, 2021, to discuss the ever-changing COVID-19 situation and I felt it was important to provide you with the context and results of this discussion as quickly as possible.

The purpose of the board meeting was to discuss the overall risk associated with face-to-face meetings and other activities throughout the federation during the COVID worldwide pandemic. As part of this meeting we acknowledged that Soroptimists gathering together and interacting is important. As members, the board understands the cost of energy, morale and money that not holding face-to-face meetings or events is likely to cause. While recognizing all of this, your board also has an obligation to protect our organization from the legal and financial risks of someone becoming infected or becoming a super spreader despite all protocols being followed. That is why after reviewing the situation, our options, the pros and cons and consulting with SIA’s General Counsel, the board made the very difficult and necessary decision to immediately place a federation wide temporary pause on all face-to-face meetings and activities authorized or sanctioned by SIA, along with associated travel, until further notice.

This difficult decision has been made for the safety and health of our members, our stakeholders and for the financial protection of our organization. The board is committed to supporting our members and focusing on member engagement during these restrictions. We will reevaluate the temporary pause, as situations evolve and change related to the COVID worldwide pandemic, and we will notify you when changes to the temporary pause occur. The federation-wide temporary pause includes all region conferences, other region meetings and activities as well as local club meetings and activities. Associated travel to these meeting and activities is also temporarily paused.

Our SIA Procedures B. 3. d. for clubs states: Should an emergency arise resulting from warlike damage or an attack on the nation in which the clubs exist, any nuclear or atomic disaster, large-scale natural disaster, public safety or public health crisis that makes it inadvisable or illegal to hold a face-to-face meeting, the club board may postpone or suspend the meeting, or may change the format of any meeting or club voting from what is stated in the club bylaws to any format supported in this procedure to ensure the continuing conduct of club administration and essential business. In these cases, the club board shall notify their members and region of these changes.

As a result of the board decision, the face-to-face components of SIA Procedures B. 3. a. and b. and F. 4. a. and b. have been suspended until further notice. Please see the following Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to assist with your concerns and to help you to answer questions that may arise in your regions and clubs.

Please continue to stay within the SIA procedures regarding this very important change to protect your health and safety, as well as those around you. Thank you for your continued adaptation during this time in our worldwide history. Should you have any questions about the board’s decision, please direct them to President Penny and Executive Director & CEO Liz.

Very truly yours,

Penny Babb

LIVE YOUR DREAM (2020-2021) Runner-up – Sarah Lucas
Meet Sarah, one of our Live Your Dream runner-up winners for 2020-2021

Sarah is a very busy student and mother of an active two-year old, Rick. She is scheduled to graduate from Butte College with her AS degree in accounting in May, and is looking forward to getting into the business world to build a healthy home for her son. Studying accounting at Butte College, she took advantage of their Accounting Club. She said it has been very helpful for learning and support and those connections will hopefully help her secure employment. She would also like to continue her schooling at CSUC in accounting.

The first thing I noticed about Sarah was the strong bond with her son and the way he comfortably curls up on her chest to nap. What a sweet little guy.

Sarah’s references describe her as inspirational, hard working, determined, focused, and dedicated, a good student and an excellent mother.

Sarah really appreciates the $1,000.00 that comes along with this award, and is looking forward to attending our Zoom award presentation on April 21 to thank SI Chico personally.

Thank you for the opportunity to chair the Live Your Dream awards this year. It is always a privilege to meet these amazing young women.

Committee Co-chairs:

I am starting the search for co-chairs for our standing committees. If you are interested in leading one of the committees next year, email or text me. I am thrilled to get started on our journey together.
