Columbus Startup Koloma Is Exploring the Potential of Hydrogen Fuel

Tom Darrah, a co-founder of Koloma, a hydrogen exploration and extraction startup, likes to draw a parallel from his company to another fuel company also founded in Columbus: Standard Oil.
“I think of it as how Standard Oil was founded. We’re likely to explore in Ohio and around the world, as well as in the U.S., but the exploration engine will be here in Ohio,” says Darrah, the Ohio State University geologist whose research spawned what could become a global name in one of the 21st century’s most promising clean fuels.

Electric Hydrogen wins 240MW electrolyser deal for Texas green ammonia project

Electric Hydrogen has been selected to supply 240MW worth of PEM electrolyser plants to a US green ammonia project developer, marking one of the company’s largest project awards to date. The firm will provide two 120MW plants to Synergen Green Energy for its flagship green ammonia project planned for Texas, as part of a front-end engineering design agreement.
The project will use Topsoe ammonia synthesis technology and is designed to produce up to 210,000 tonnes of ammonia per year, with a start-up targeted for Q4 2028, subject to final investment decision.

BMW: Hydrogen Will Play A ‘Crucial Role’ In The Car Industry

BMW has been researching hydrogen vehicles since the 1970s, but it has never brought one to market. That will finally change in 2028, when the iX5 Hydrogen goes on sale. While many argue that fuel cell vehicles are a futile effort, the German luxury brand takes a different view. BMW’s Chief Technology Officer told Auto Motor und Sport that hydrogen will play a “crucial role” in the car industry.

Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) today announced a strategic investment in FirstElement Fuel, Inc., (FEF) the largest retail hydrogen fueling infrastructure provider in California, with 92 retail fueling positions across 38 locations. TMNA and FEF aim to strengthen infrastructure for today’s fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) drivers and bolster the hydrogen fueling network for current and future generations of FCEVs.

World’s largest hydrogen fuel cell plant to power 270,000 homes yearly in South Korea

South Korea has officially broken ground on the world’s largest hydrogen fuel cell power plant, which is expected to generate enough clean electricity to power around 270,000 households annually. Located in Gyeongju, in the North Gyeongsang province, the 108-megawatt (MW) Gangdong Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Generation Project is set to become fully operational by 2028.
Gyeongju City Council representatives stated that the plant will deliver baseload electricity to the national grid and catalyze regional industrial growth.

KTH Scientists Develop Catalyst for Faster Hydrogen Production

Researchers at KTH Royal Institute of Technology have developed a nickel–iron catalyst that helps split water into hydrogen and oxygen faster and more efficiently.
KTH Professor Lichen Sun with contributions from KTH Professor Mårten Ahlquist and doctoral researcher Hao Yang engineered a molecular scaffold to hold nickel and iron atoms in fixed positions which allowed the researchers to study how electrons and protons move during water splitting.
