The Very Rev. Matthew Woodward previews this year's annual meeting

Annual Meeting - To love and to serve each other food…

The Very Rev. Matthew Woodward

Dean of the Cathedral

Dear Cathedral Family,

Our Annual Dinner is coming up, and we need your help to make it a success. The Annual Dinner will be a potluck with some slight adjustments. We are going to have a selection of your favorite pan-baked dinners, and are hoping that we get to taste some cathedral members' favorite family recipes. Not everyone has to cook, but we need everyone to volunteer for something. We are asking the cooks to make us any of the following: lasagna, enchiladas or your favorite pan-baked casserole. Pan-based foods to make it easier for us to prepare and serve on the day.

The meeting will be on Feb 25 at 4:00 pm, followed by happy hour (with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages). This will allow for some set-up time in the Great Hall. Then the dinner will follow.

We also need volunteers to make the whole evening move smoothly. So below you will see a RSVP link, and a volunteer sign up link. There are seven ways to volunteer. Let me outline them for you:

Saturday Set up - 15 people

Help set up the great hall and prep for Sunday (time to be confirmed)

Sunday Set up and servers - 15 people

From 2:00-4:00 pm come in and do last minute set up tasks, also be willing to get pans out of the oven before dinner and do final set up tasks.

Happy Hour - 15 people

Bring in snacks and drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, and set them up in the courtyard for happy hour, which will give

Pan-Baked Dinner Bakers - 15 people

Pick up a baking tin in church on Feb 18, so you have the right size to fit in the Cathedral oven. Then take it home and prepare either lasagna, enchiladas or your favorite pan-baked casserole. You can bring your unbaked pan dinner between 2:00-4:00 pm on Sunday, Feb 19. The dishes will be put in the oven to bake during our annual meeting. Please check in with Chef Kevin Donohue about your preparation.

Salad Makers - 15 people

Get a tin on Feb 12 and take it home to make a salad (bring the dressing on the side). Bring the salad back between 2:00-4:00 pm on Feb 19. It will be put into the fridge until time for dinner.

Desert providers - 15 people

Bring a dessert in a cooler, to be brought out at the end of the meal.

Tidy uppers - 15 people

Stay back and help clear up the Great Hall and Kitchen, and make sure we don’t leave too much to the custodians.

If you are keeping track, that is 105 volunteers, so all hands on deck. Our vestry members will volunteer for different teams, and may reach out to you to encourage you to jump in. We hope to have a fun evening where not too much falls on any one person.

Please do remember to RSVP that you are coming – we may adjust the volunteer needs as we begin to see how many mouths we'll need to feed.

Thanks all. Looking forward to seeing you!

Love,

Children, Youth, & Families

Family Faith Formation News

The Rev. Alex Leach, Director of Formation

Two big deadlines come this week: Today is the deadline for any teenagers (or adults) to sign up for Confirmation. We currently have a class of nine teenagers & adults who are set to meet for three Fridays in February and March for 90 minutes of dinner and learning. If you are interested for yourself or for your teenager, please contact Rev. Alex ASAP.

And this Sunday is the final day to sign up for one of our Lent Regional Formation Groups. These are groups designed for all ages to reflect on scripture, build relationships with each other, and pray together. Groups will meet in small gatherings close to people's homes, perhaps in one of your Trinity neighbors' very own home! The curriculum chosen was specifically chosen with families with kids of all ages in mind. You can sign up this Sunday at Coffee Hour on the map boards or through this online survey.

This Sunday is also Youth Group! This month's focus will be on a game of Jeopardy (complete with giant Jeopardy board & buzzers) that will give us space to reflect on the variety of ways Christian denominations understand the Bible, Jesus, and the Church. There will of course be snacks and time to check in as well. Youth Group will meet in the Assembly Area at 10:30 am.

Cathedral Life

Bring Ashes to the Masses –Volunteers Needed!

Trinity Cathedral, along with St. Paul's Episcopal and St. John's Lutheran, is hosting another year of Ashes-to-Go on February 14 from 11:00-2:00 pm. The planning team is seeking volunteers to administer ashes at walk up and curbside sites at churches and other sites in the city. A training will take place on Zoom on Monday February 12 at 5:30 pm. Please email Canon Megan if you are interested.

Confirmation Classes Sign-up Deadline Today

One's faith life is long and takes many turns. So it is important in that journey to have milestones where people take their faith deeper, mark transitions, and reaffirm their commitment to following Jesus' Way of Love. Confirmation, reaffirmation of faith, and reception into the Episcopal Church can be those milestone markers, and those opportunities to deepen one's faith.

If you are interested in any of these (or just curious about them), contact the Rev. Alex Leach. The class will start soon and will take people up to the Easter Vigil (March 30) where the Bishop will preside over these three rites.

This class is for all ages, and even if you're not sure which of the three is appropriate for you (or if any are appropriate), you are encouraged to reach out to Rev. Alex to learn more. Confirmation is particularly appropriate for teenagers as a coming-of-age rite, and for adults who want to serve the church on Vestry or the wider Diocesan committees.

Validate Parking Tickets After Attending, Not Before

Once you validate your parking by scanning your parking ticket at in the Cathedral or Great Hall, you will have 30 minutes to exit the garage. Please make sure to validate your parking ticket when you are ready to head out of the Cathedral so that you have enough time to exit the parking garage. If you validate your ticket before you are ready to go and 30 minutes have passed, you will need to call the ProPark administration via the exiting gate.

Deadline Sunday to Join Lent Regional Small Groups – LIFT

This year in Lent, which begins on February 14, Trinity will be supporting regional small groups to meet weekly during the season. The groups are based around geographic areas, and each group will have a facilitator picked and supported by the Trinity Formation Team and a curriculum to help structure your time together. The curriculum is Living in Faith Together (LIFT), and it specifically has all ages in mind, so kids to adults are welcome to participate.

The groups will meet weekly from approximately Feb 17 to March 23. Specific days, times, and locations will be determined by the group. Attendance at all five weeks is not mandatory to participate, since the LIFT curriculum is drop-in friendly.

And you can sign to be part of a group this online. Any questions can be directed to the Rev. Alex Leach.

Lenten Book Groups Announced

Temptations of Jesus

The Rev. Dr. Howard Thurman was a major influence in the African American churches during the 1950s and 1960s and beyond. His work provided much of the theological foundation for Martin Luther King, Jr’s nonviolent philosophy. This little book, "Temptations of Jesus," contains five sermons exploring the temptations that Jesus faced, temptations that are common to us all. Preceding each sermon is a prayer that invites us to enter into deep places of the soul.

This group will meet via Zoom for five Tuesdays starting February 20 at 1:00 pm. Contact facilitator Bud Swank to register and receive the Zoom link.

Weekly Lectio Divina + JWJ Open Hour – Sundays at 1:00 pm

As part of a sabbatical year of reflection, the Journey with Jesus team is going to be offering weekly Lectio Divina every Sunday at 1 pm in the Assembly Area.

Lectio Divina is a particular way of reading scripture in a prayerful way that truly helps us hear what the Spirit is saying to God's People through scripture. Dropping into these weekly gatherings is also a great way to learn more about the Catechumenate and Journey with Jesus program. Any questions about Journey with Jesus or these Lectio gatherings can be directed to Rev. Alex Leach.

Outreach

Participate in Sacramento Homeless Point-In-Time Count

Sacramento's 2024 Point-In-Time Count needs YOU! A complete count of all individuals experiencing homeless is vital for us to receive federal funds appropriate to our level of need. In 2022, Sacramento County programs received $30.5 million to serve unsheltered individuals and families. This year’s count will be held next Wednesday and Thursday, January 24 and January 25, 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm. The participation of hundreds of volunteers matters as we work together to cover more ground and contribute to a vision where homelessness is rare and brief. This is a well-organized program. Training is provided and volunteers go in groups. Trinity member Shireen Miles has participated in four PIT counts, and is happy to answer questions. She has found it very enlightening and rewarding. Contact her at (916) 203-5595 or shireenmiles@comcast.net.
