Important January News
Pastor's Medical Leave:
You may have noticed Pastor sitting while leading worship from time to time. Because of persistent dizziness and similar symptoms, the Bishop's office and Church Council have agreed that Pastor will be placed on a two week leave of absence from January 2nd through January15th for medical testing and respite. During that time Pastor Dave Stoner will be on-call for pastoral care and will be preaching/presiding at worship, with funds provided from the NJ Synod and the Bishop's office. Pastor Stoner will also be attending the January Church Council meeting.
You can reach him through the Church office, his phone (856-266-2567), or email (davestoner@comcast.net). Please hold Pastor Wendolyn in prayer as she seeks healing.
Review Of Saturday Worship Service,
Share Your Voice!:
Lord of Life has had a Saturday service for many years, with many different ways of worshipping together. From "Service of the Word" to Taize, with or without fellowship or communion, led by pastors or laypeople, starting earlier or later... it has been a flexible service.
In the coming months, Worship & Music members are going to share in conversations about worship life at Lord of Life, especially regarding the Saturday, 5:00 PM service. The committee is considering options for how to care for this service (key word: options!). Some of these options include holding it during months with longer daylight, or turning it into a fellowship/devotional time once a month. Council supports our Pastor having one Saturday per month to have a full day off with her family, which creates opportunities for creative worship planning and filling that gap.
We hope you'll share your thoughts, ideas, and hopes for the 5:00 PM service with our Worship & Music Committee members: Nancy DiYenno, Jacqueline Dennis, Lu Hourihan, Andrew Jacobs, Sue Dreisbach, Rick Krause, or Council liaisons Farrah Dennis and Lee Jennings.

Wednesdays,
At 11:00 AM
Our next Bible Study will use the book, James, Genuine Faith by Sam Allberry, in order for us to discuss the Epistle of James. Many churches, and many believers, long for a deeper, more whole-hearted Christian life. But what does that look like? James wrote his letter to show us.
This deeply practical book of the Bible shows us what genuine faith looks like. These six sessions will reveal to groups and individuals how to experience joy in hardships, patience in suffering, and whole-heartedness in how you speak, act and pray. Below is a list of the readings each session will cover during January and February.

The Road to Character
by David Brooks
Book Club will not meet in January, but will resume on February 14th.
Named one of the best books of the year and a New York Times number one best seller, we will be discussing David Brooks’ The Road to Character.
Looking to some of the world’s greatest thinkers and inspiring leaders,
Brooks explores how, through internal struggle and a sense of their
own limitations, they have built a strong inner character. Blending psychology, politics, spirituality, and confessional, The Road to Character provides an opportunity for us to rethink our priorities and strive to build rich inner lives marked by humility and moral depth.

"Spare A Square" Faith Development Center
Roof Replacement Campaign
Dear Lord of Life members,
As you can see in the photo, many squares of shingles have been added to the Faith Development Center (FDC) roof! As of December 27th, $2,725 has been donated to lower the financial burden of the repair cost. THANK YOU to all our contributors!
Our campaign will continue into the new year. If you have not already made a donation, please consider doing so. A Square of shingles costs $50. You can use your regular church envelopes or just a plain envelope to enclose your check. Please designate the contribution for "Spare A Square." You can place your envelope in the collection plate during the church services or mail it to the church office. Whatever you can contribute would be greatly appreciated. The roof repairs will start as soon as the contractor's schedule allows. So, soon you will get to see what our Stewardship campaign told us to expect: Grace in Action!
Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Quilting Ministry Thursday, January 12th,
At 10:00 AM
A Message From Gloria Brosious
Looking forward to moving on with our wonderful quilt ministry! We will be meeting on the 2nd Thursday of the month, January 12th, at 10:00 AM in Fellowship Hall. We would love to add more people to our group. Come on out to see how we work together!
Just to review how the quilts are made: Fabric is the main component; we have an abundance of fabric at this time. What is really needed are more people to help put the quilts together. Our quilts are very simple: 11" squares - 6 across & 8 down - sewn together. Then they are "sandwiched" with a batting and backing. Finally, they are tied and the binding is sewn. One other important step is making up kits which contain pre-cut squares that form one quilt.
Four steps make our quilts. If you would like to help, you can choose any of the 4 steps to work on the quilts. The assembled kits are left on the quilt display table in the Narthex. Anyone willing to sew one together is welcome to take a kit home with them.
In 2022 we sent 82 quilts to the warehouse of Lutheran World Relief. This makes Lord Of Life's total donation of quilts equal to 848. Our first delivery of quilts was in 2014 which had just 21. We all should be proud of these marvelous creations.
Remember, we will save a seat for you on January 12th!

Helping Hands Ministry
Wednesday, January 25th,
At 9:30 AM
(For The Christian Caring Center)
Helping Hands is a monthly ministry to make sandwiches for the homeless served by Christian Caring Center. It meets the last Wednesday of each month. We form an assembly line and make over 200 sandwiches in an hour. Jobs are easy – putting meat and cheese in a roll, placing sandwiches in a baggie, counting the sandwiches, and putting them in a grocery bag. Everyone gets a small, easy task and a lot gets done quickly while we share some time together. We keep everyone safe by wearing gloves and masks, spacing ourselves, and venting the room. All are invited to join us! If you have any questions, please contact Janell Reich.

Lord Of Life
Play-Offs Food Drive
Supporting The Bridge Of Peace
Food Pantry
Lord Of Life will be having a "Play-Offs" food drive starting on Saturday, January 7th. You will be able to support your “team” by putting canned food donations into their designated collection box. One point will be awarded for each item. Our scoreboard will be updated weekly to reflect which box/team/sport is winning. The collection will go through the date of our annual meeting on Sunday, January 29th. Donations support the Bridge of Peace food pantry. We know that pantries tend to receive far less support in January and February so this food drive is a much needed one and will support many. There may be "mystery items" that get double points - based on what the pantry most needs that week. There are also “Extra Point” foods that are listed below. We hope everyone will play along and cheer their team to victory!
The 5 Teams And Their Captains Are:
1. Soccer - Philadelphia Union and local soccer teams - the Tomlinsons
2. Baseball - Phillies and Cherokee Chiefs - Rick Krause
3. Football - Eagles & Seneca Golden Eagles - the Millers
4. Basketball - 76ers and Shawnee Renegades - The Christiansons
5. Hockey – Flyers, Erin Gordon’s power hockey team, and other local schools - the Safiers
“Extra Point” foods include:
Boxed milk (parmalat style sold at dollar stores)
Canned Chicken
Beef Stew
Pork and Beans
Tomato Sauce with Meat
Rice 1 lb bags
Cereal
A Note From Pastor Giselle:
It is so thoughtful of you all to support our PEACE Center food program. We wish you and everyone at Lord Of Life a merry Christmas and an amazing year in 2023.

Congregation and Council member Jim Ernst helped with the delivery of our Giving Tree gifts to the Christian Caring Center. Here is a message from him to all:

MORE Athletic Shoe Collection
MORE stands for Modular Organic Regenerative Environments. The group is 100% funded by recycled athletic shoes, keeping them out of landfills. Donated shoes are sold to participating vendors in developing countries. Proceeds regenerate forests and jump start small farming co-ops in needy regions. This creates retail jobs while stimulating free enterprise. MORE provides basic supplies, tools, seeds (fruit-bearing mango, papaya, avocado and income producing mahogany), and agroforestry training to poor farming families, school children and rural villages.
You can contribute your used sneakers or athletic shoes by placing them in the collection box located in the church entryway. Please sneaker-type used footwear only, no dress or other shoes.

Tuesday, January 24th From 2:00 PM To 7:00 PM
Lord Of Life will host another American Red Cross Blood Drive in Fellowship Hall. Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. To date, in the 33 previous blood drives at our church, we have collected a total of 1,408 units of blood. Use the link below to register and schedule your donation. Christmas Letter
From
Bishop Bartholomew
Below is the letter from the NJ Synod Bishop. It was received too late to be put in the December LifeLines, but we still wanted to share it with all our church members.
December 2022
The Word became a human being and lived here with us. We saw his true glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father. From him the complete gifts of undeserved grace and truth have come down to us. John 1:14 (CEV)
Dear Friends in Christ,
During the month of December, I watched as our congregations gathered to observe a variety of cultural and ethnic traditions. While lighting Advent wreaths every Sunday, congregations have also celebrated St. Nicholas Day, Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Lucia Day and more. It has been fun to see pictures of the ways these cultural traditions are being passed down to the next generations. Bright red bishop’s robes and gifts of gold-wrapped coins, colorful flowers and mariachi bands, saffron buns and crowns of candles all make an appearance during these December days.
In our homes, additional traditions are carried out: Christmas trees are decorated, cookies and treats are baked and served with love, Advent calendars are opened each day, colorful lights and wreaths are put up outside, manger scenes are brought out and put on display.
It is a joy to live in a place where so many different ethnic and cultural traditions are shared and celebrated. Diversity and respect are two core values of our synod which are embodied during these December days. Being invited to learn about and participate in a tradition different from one’s own is a gift.
At the heart of all these celebrations and traditions lies the reality of God’s incarnation – God coming to us in the flesh and blood of Jesus. God chose to be born into a particular time and place in history, a place with its own cultural and ethnic traditions. And in doing that, blesses our celebrations.
I encourage you this Christmas to invite someone to experience your celebrations and to share your traditions with someone new this year. It’s not too late to bring a neighbor or family member to church with you on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day so they might receive the blessing of your faith community joined in song and prayer. It just might be that in your sharing you find that you are actually receiving anew the gift of God’s love made real for you.
Merry Christmas, dear friends,
Bishop Tracie L. Bartholomew

Jim
James J. Cuviello, LifeLines Editor
"A Wish For The New Year"
Dear Lord, please give me...
A few friends who understand me and remain my friends;
A work to do which has real value, without which the world would be the poorer;
A mind unafraid to travel, even though the trail be not blazed;
An understanding heart;
A sense of humor;
Time for quiet, silent meditation;
A feeling of the presence of God;
The patience to wait for the coming of these things, with the wisdom to recognize them when they come.
