January 1 Greetings
Dear Ones,

It’s Friday, the first day of the year 2021, as we continue to “Be Church Together” even as the church building is closed for gatherings. New Year’s Blessings to all of you! The church office is closed today for the holiday, and I hope this quick note finds everyone enjoying the crisp, cold winter day! The sunrises and sunset have been amazing lately, and the weather forecast calls for sunny and highs in low to mid 50s for the next week or so, so get out and take a walk or jump in the car for a little drive, it’s good for you.
I’ve been working on my annual report…what to say about the most unusual year ever? I follow a wise man named Steven Charleston, who is an Episcopal priest and Native American (Choctaw) and was the Bishop of the Diocese of Alaska from 1991 until 1996. Here is his post from yesterday:
The closer the New Year gets, the more I find myself looking over my shoulder. I want to make sure we don’t leave anyone behind. And there are lots of hurting people trying to make it to the imaginary border of a change in the calendar. But this year that imaginary border has become far more real. We need to gather up the memories of those we lost. We must support those who need help along the way after such a long and difficult journey. We need to look to our elders and to young families. No one must be left behind. Everyone should cross the threshold knowing they are loved and needed. So I think I will hang out on this side of the line for a while, just to make sure.
If you are someone who needs some help along the way, please don’t be afraid to reach out. You are loved and needed!

More Christmas songs
(today is the seventh day of Christmas)
I haven’t heard this one yet: “Good King Wenceslas” from The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain!
Here is a video of the Christmas L.A. Brass Spectacular several years ago from Emmanuel Lutheran, North Hollywood. Los Angeles studio musicians gather to raise funds each year for the Hearts of Music Fund, helping musicians without health insurance. There have been as many as 50 trombones playing there in the church chancel!
Ministry Team Coordinators and Committee Chairs, don’t forget that your annual report is due the first few days of January. We are hoping to get the reports mailed to everyone by January 14 so that there will be plenty of time for folks to read them to be ready for the annual congregational meeting on Saturday, January 30.
Please continue to make good choices regarding your safety and others': the COVID-19 cases in our community continue to spike. Wear your mask, keep your distance, stay at home if you are at risk or not feeling well, and wash your hands. Precious ones, choose love to care for your neighbor and yourself by staying safe!
Remember to check in with each other, and don’t hesitate to call me (310-890-9785) or the church office (928-772-4135) if you need something, or email emmanuelelca@gmail.com if you have something to share.

A Bible verse for today:

I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
