Harry and Leota: An Unlikely Story of Love in the Digital Age
There is always more than one way to tell a story. How we choose to weave our narratives has an impact on how we live our values. This Sunday, we revel in one amazing story of love and the lessons we might all learn from it. Rev. Eileen leads this service, with Shirley Adams as our Worship Associate. The UCE Choir directed by Vickie Hellyer and accompanied by Gregory Shifrin on piano. Jenn Wisegarver will be our vocal soloist.

UPDATES FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Living Our Values 91.404 Million Miles Away
Dateline January, 2025: The sun is getting closer! In fact, it’s going to land on our roof.
A generous bequest to UCE from Barbara Young’s estate was given in 2024 with the intended purpose of helping make our building more energy efficient by installing solar panels.
After months of rigorous research and meetings with suppliers, Adam Gough, with Jeanie McCullogh, Robb Geiger, and Roger Young, recommended a contractor and bid to the board at our December 2024 meeting.
After in-depth discussion of cost, mechanics and objectives, the board unanimously approved the proposal. Work will commence later in 2025. The scope of this project is a complicated, well-considered undertaking. Details will be shared with the congregation at a town hall, with future updates online and from the pulpit.
By the generosity of our sun and Barbara, we move light years beyond wishing — and into transformative results. We’ll carry on under a truly “universal” roof, generating clean energy and savings for years to come. Wishing all of us a happy New Year—powered by purpose, fueled by hope, sustained by love.
The UCE Board of Directors

Our hats are off to Kiley Korey and Kevin Barrow for many reasons, but most recently for sitting with Rev. Eileen on a Saturday afternoon to make little booklets for our fire community service.
But that's far from all they contribute. Kiley and Kevin are both so willing to lend their musical gifts to the congregation, singing in the choir, as hymn leaders and soloists and Kevin playing clarinet. Kiley has been an excellent addition to our Worship Planning Team. They are both doing a beautiful job leading our Young Adult Group with spiritual deepening followed by all manner of game playing.
They coordinated several outings and just generally show up in countless ways. You are both loved and appreciated!

THE CARING TEAM NEEDS MORE VOLUNTEERS FOR
MEALS AND RIDES
In case you didn't hear Jean Butzen's moving testimonial in church, she spoke in gratitude about receiving meals at her home after her second hip replacement. Other members have received rides to doctor's appointments and church.
The Caring Team invites you to join the list of folks who can bring meals or provide rides. This does not obligate you to do anything; it just allows you to know when there is a need. If you can provide a meal or a ride for someone, we will provide all the details. It gives you a chance to get to know another member better and to be of great service to the community.
Please consider letting Ellie Feddersen (elliefeddersen@gmail.com or 847-452-3142) know if you would like to be added to the list. Just let us know if it is for meals or rides or both.

Learn about UCE South Rain Garden Renovation!
About 14 years ago UCE installed its first rain garden. It has been researched by Northwestern University students. Now it is time to renovate this garden as it has become overrun with invasive plants. The Garden Team will be sharing what we learned from the research and how we’ll be renovating the South Rain Garden at two public meetings, before sending a proposal to Endowment for this important project.
The 1st meeting is Tuesday, Jan 14th at 6:30 PM via Zoom. If you’re interested in attending, contact Janelle Brittain for the Zoom link. The 2nd meeting will be in person on Sunday, Jan 19th at 12:00 after church service in Room 6. Come learn about why we need rain gardens and how ours is going to be beautifully biodiverse again.

Zoning, Housing and Faith Communities
A presentation by Connections for the Homeless
At UCE on Wednesday, February 5th at 7pm
What does zoning have to do with the high cost of housing or people experiencing homelessness? Plenty, actually, but it’s complicated.
The City of Evanston is rewriting its zoning code during its Envision Evanston 2045 process. The last time the zoning code was rewritten was in 1993, which means many of our laws are outdated and actually reinforce some of the inequities in our community. Evanston’s bad zoning laws limit our ability to find housing we can afford, live near transportation, and access essential community resources and businesses. We need zoning that works for us, not against us.
To talk about the impact, what the City is doing about it, why faith communities should care, and what you can do to make a difference, join us on February 5th at 7pm at the Unitarian Church of Evanston.
Read the Evanston Clergy and Leaders letter to the Zoning Commission here
Please help spread the word, thanks!

Learning About Our Shared Offering Recipient... | | | |
Our Shared Offering Program is one of the ways that we live into our mission statement "for a world made whole." Each Sunday, the funds collected during our worship service either via text donations or in the collection bowls (and not otherwise designated for a pledge or something else) are shared equally between our operating budget and the current Shared Offering Recipient.
The current Shared Offering Recipient is the C&W Market Foundation, whose mission is to enrich the Evanston community by providing essential grocery access to those facing food insecurity and fostering career skills in the food and culinary industry.

The next meeting of the UCE Fiction Book Group
will be January 17th by ZOOM, 7-8pm
using our Recurring Zoom link
The UCE Fiction Book Group is reading
Tommy Orange, There, There
This award-winning novel follows twelve characters from Native communities: all traveling to the Big Oakland Powwow, all connected to one another in ways they may not yet realize. They converge and collide on one fateful day at the Big Oakland Powwow and together this chorus of voices tells of the plight of the urban Native American—grappling with a complex and painful history, with an inheritance of beauty and spirituality, with communion and sacrifice and heroism.
February 21: Geraldine Brooks, Horse
Based on the remarkable true story of the record-breaking thoroughbred Lexington, Horse is a novel of art and science, love and obsession, and our unfinished reckoning with racism. Spanning a century and a half, the story begins with an enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal who forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South.

UCE Nonfiction Book Group
The group will meet on Zoom at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 26th using our recurring ZOOM link.
The nonfiction group will meet to discuss The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance, 1917-2017 by Rashid Khalid.
The author focuses on six major episodes he characterizes as “declarations of war” on the Palestinian people and argues that the struggle in Palestine should be understood as “a colonial war waged against the indigenous population to force them to relinquish their homeland to another people against their will.”
In addition to the more traditional sources and methods employed by a historian, Khalid draws on family archives, stories passed down through his family from generation to generation, and his own experiences as an activist and as someone who has been involved in negotiations among Palestinian groups and with Israelis.
