WEEKLY UPDATE |January 10-16, 2021
JANUARY 7, 2021
A Message from Rev. Vicki
Dear Congregation,

Yesterday's violent insurrection at our nation's capitol likely shocked and enraged you as it did me. Many have called for healing. As people of faith who affirm, in the words of Cornel West, that justice is what love looks like in public, we know that we will continue to strengthen our democracy by fighting for it. Spiritual people are armed not with guns but with open hearts and fierce commitment to the well-being and flourishing of all people. As Unitarian Universalists we decry the propagation of dangerous conspiracy theories and anti-science resentments and rage. We know that healing does not come without a restoration of integrity. I am on a midwinter study break from January 10-15 and taking off the next two Sundays from worship leading and preparation, as I have not entirely done so since the start of the pandemic.

I am available to talk and to pray and meet with you after January 15th. In the meanwhile, God help us and may we help each other.

In faith, hope and love, Rev. Vicki

There were issues with a global outage recently and some did not receive their Weekly Update directly to their email addresses. We just want to remind everyone that the most current issue is always available on our website.
Reopening Guidelines Update
Change in Church Use
Request Procedure

While we are not holding regular services or meetings at the church, we have had some requests for one-time events. The governance committee will review any requests and grant approval for use of the church building and grounds.

If you wish to use the church property for an event, please email the details (date, presenters' contact information and a full description of the event) to president@uucgl.org.

At a minimum, events need to comply with current state and local guidelines (masks, number of participants, socially distanced) and all organizers need to submit to Elizabeth Muller a list of contact information for all attendees the day after the event.

If you have further questions feel free to contact me, Eileen Cummings: president@uucgl.org

Social Justice Ministry Team News

“Justice is what loves look like in public.” ~Cornel West

So many ways to support justice and show love in public! Here are a few:

Food insecurity – we are working with St. Stephan’s food pantry (Michael Celona is our team lead) and did a successful food drive for MBT and Anchor Food pantry. Members of the congregation are helping out MBT – see related article for info and opportunities. Clare Campbell is our lead.

Learning – reading books, listening to podcasts, discussions. Let’s discuss "So You Want to Talk About Race" by Ijeoma Oluo in January. Martha Curry to coordinate – we can all lead! What podcast or book do you recommend and want to talk about?

Beloved EconomyLong term systemic changes – with our partner ECCO, while we attend to immediate needs, we seek changes in policy to improve everyone’s lives. Join a day-time session to learn more about ECCO’s Beloved Economy that will be scheduled in January, Click here to learn about and give to ECCO or reach out to Scott Nowka or Debbie Boggs. Even a few dollars, $5 or $10, makes a difference.

Consider supporting a local worker owned business organized by ECCO– give a Shine Together gift certificate for cleaning now or in the future – go to shinetogethercoop.com for details.

Stay tuned – Jeff Gunther, Martha Curry and Gloria Kozlosky are working on a “fun” raiser that will include raising funds in the new year for our short- and long-term initiatives. Are you a crafter? Have a talent to share? Stay tuned for details.
The Green Sanctuary Ministry Team Says:
Go Take a Hike!

UUCGL Members hike the new Forest River Trail.

Given that spending just a couple of hours a week in nature leads to improved health and wellbeing, the Green Sanctuary Ministry Team recently invited you and your family to go take a hike and share photos of your adventure with the congregation. So, go take a hike!
