A Message from Rev. Vicki
In the Spirit

I saw a headline from the Swampscott Patch yesterday that said, and I kid you not, "Has MA's COVID-19 Surge Peaked? Boston-Area Sewage Suggests 'Yes.'"
You will forgive me, I hope, for laughing ruefully at this unintentionally hilarious headline. I know that it is based on science, but for a moment I was reminded of the soothsayers of ancient days who read the fortunes of the kings in the entrails of dead birds or in tea leaves. It was very National Enquirer: "Sewage Sez Surge Stopping!"
We are so desperate for reliable information. One headline gives us cause for hope that the surge is easing, other headlines say not for at least another month. I myself feel like I am stumbling around lately, not having at all anticipated that the winter of 2022 would resemble the winter of 2021 in so many ways.
I am so very sorry that there seems (to me) to be a major common sense gap between the governor's insistence that in-school learning is the only thing that counts for the children of the commonwealth and the reality of hundreds (thousands?) of kids, teachers, administrators and support staff being out sick. I start every day with prayers for everyone's well-being, patience, safety, strength and sanity. I pray for the students, teachers, parents, health care workers, the lonely, the downcast, the ones whose gumption is in hibernation, and for the particularly resilient, creative and funny souls who miraculously continue to inspire the rest of us.
Can I say thank God for Zoom? I know it's not your favorite, most of you, but I don't know what we would do without it. I'm incredibly grateful that we can still gather remotely with no masks or anxiety. I am out of the pulpit this Sunday but I look forward to seeing you soon as we get back into the swing of meetings and programs. Stay warm, stay safe and stay in touch.
In faith, hope and love,
Rev. Vicki
UUCGL Covid Protocol Reminder
While at the Church

Please, community members, remember that masks and social distancing are required at all times while in the church building, even for a few people. No one wants to be the one to ask someone to wear a mask or to refuse an embrace, so let's not put each other in that position.
We all want to be close, we all wish we could dispense with masks but at this time, we are committed to mitigating the spread of the coronavirus. Smiles are there under the masks, and embraces are implied! Stay safe, stay well.
Faith Development
January Faith Development Update

This Sunday our faith development program will plan again to meet outside, off-site, and masked, as it seems a good strategy to deal with this surge. Please email me at chris.scheller@gmail.com if you are interested in joining this Sunday so that I can add you to our group communication list and notify you of any updates! OWL classes are on hold this month until we determine it is safe for the group to meet in person again.
We know this is a challenging time for so many parents! There can be lots of juggling and struggle, especially for those with children home from school. Please reach out if you would like to talk with me and other parents.
May we all stay safe and healthy,

Chris Scheller
Director of Community Life and Learning

UUCGL and the Local Community
St. Stephen's Food Pantry
can use our help!

St. Stephen's food pantry is in need of money and food. The number of people visiting the pantry is up after a dip during the summer. For food donations, it is best if they have many of the same types of items (i.e., one for each bag). If people want to coordinate the purchasing and donating of certain items (peanut butter, eggs, etc.), let me know.
If people want to donate money to the pantry, they can make the check out to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church (put PANTRY in the memo) and mail to:
St. Stephen's Food Pantry, C/O St. Stephen's Episcopal Church
74 South Common Street, Lynn, MA 01902
We have a growing UUCGL team volunteering at the pantry on Fridays; please contact the church if you can join us.

Can You Help My Brother's Table
Brown Bag Meal Program?

MBT’s response to the pandemic was to assemble a network of volunteers who work from their homes. These off-site volunteers assemble lunch and dinner bags to provide to-go meals while MBT is not open for in-house dining. If you are interested in working with other church members to assemble lunch or dinner bags OR if you are interested in supporting this work with a monetary donation or a food donation, we would like to hear from you. For more information about MBT please contact Deb Boggs, Clare Campbell, or Michael Celona. To find out more about our efforts for local food pantries and our Social Justice Ministry Team activities, please go to our website page at https://www.uucgl.org/socialjustice.
UUCGL Reopening Guidelines
Guidelines from UUCGL's
Reopening Task Force

Our highest priority is the health and wellbeing of our congregation and community. In recent months we have learned that the Delta variant is much more contagious and dangerous than previously thought, particularly for unvaccinated individuals. We strongly encourage members of our congregation to take advantage of free vaccinations and testing to better protect the most vulnerable among us. In addition, we offer the following guidelines to give UUCGL’s congregation an active role in stopping the spread of the Delta variant while still allowing us to gather in person. These guidelines will be in place through December 31, 2021, at which point staff members and the Reopening Task Force will re-evaluate using community health data and UUA and CDC recommendations.
