Fairfax Update
News From Around Town...
January 18,2022
Dear Residents and Neighbors,

Yesterday, we honored Martin Luther King Jr. Day. As I reflected on his legacy, his mission and his notion of “beloved community” I realized that there are many ways we honor his memory including a holiday from school and work, monuments, and parks. Perhaps, as we enter our 3rd year of COVID with so many issues we face locally and as a nation that we have no control over, the best way to honor this extraordinary leader is through service. "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?' " Dr. King Jr. said to an audience in Montgomery, Alabama in 1957.

I observe kindness and generosity every day in Fairfax. Commitment to community is one of the values I believe we universally share, and it’s one of things I love most about living here. We have tremendous capacity for compassion and spirit of good will towards All. Proceeding into this new year may we all set an intention and feel a call to action to volunteer, to help, to serve, to give in some way in contribution to the cause for creating “beloved community”. In his last Christmas sermon, Dr. King Jr. said, “Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly”. As we are interconnected so too is our happiness, peace, and freedom.

Upcoming Town Council Meeting - January 19th at 7pm

At the Town Council Meeting this Wednesday, the Council will be discussing some key issues including:

  • A discussion of the Housing Sites Inventory and the community engagement that went into collecting ideas for this process.

  • Discussion of short term rentals in the Town and options to regulate them.

Sir Francis Drake Closure Update

Work continues on the emergency repairs resulting from the December 13th sinkhole discovery.

Work in process or recently completed includes:

  • A second layer of structural connection between the failed unreinforced concrete wall and the steel sheet pile wall,
  • backfilling of the excavation,
  • forming and pouring of a replacement pedestrian sidewalk (owing to its importance as a route serving Oak Manor and White Hill schools),
  • thrie-beam guardrail re-installation, and
  • fencing reinstallation.

Work should be complete this week.

Thank you for your patience as we complete this important work.
Housing Element Update

The Town Council and the Planning Commission have been working the past several months to update the current Safety Element.

What’s a Safety Element and how does it relate to the Housing Element Update process?

  • The Safety Element, like the Housing Element, is a component of Fairfax’s General Plan.
  • The Town is required by law to revise the Safety Element to be revised at the same time as the Town is preparing the Housing Element update.
  • Updating the Safety Element and the Housing Element at the same time is important because the Safety Element will have valuable information that can inform decisions on the Housing Element.

A preliminary draft of the updated Safety Element will be available on the Fairfax Speaks website soon for the public to review.

How can I participate?

  • Your input can help ensure that Fairfax plans for future housing needs in a way that cares for you neighbors and your community.
  • Visit the Fairfax Speaks Sites Inventory page to see and provide input on the potential sites being considered for additional housing.
  • Make sure to register on the Fairfax Speaks website for future updates throughout this year-long planning process.

The Ross Valley Sanitary District (RVSD) has completed clean-up at our former treatment plant site (at 2000 Larkspur Landing Circle) and received final signoff from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA’s official clearance letter allows unrestricted land use for the site. RVSD is now initiating community engagement to help plan for future uses at the site.

Take a 3 to 5 minute survey to provide your input about land uses and development at the RVSD’s former treatment plant at 2000 Larkspur Landing Circle.

Open until March 10, 2022

Physical copies of the survey are available at:

Marin Water Update
The winter rainfall has been very good news for our water supply needs and have ensured that we will have adequate water supply through the year. However, despite the current rains, we are planning for dry months ahead of us and the District is focused on the sustainability of our water system to be prepared for highly variable climate conditions. Regardless of any action the District may take in the short-term as a result of the surge in winter rainfall boosting our water supply levels, we also remain committed to our ongoing work on various drought resiliency projects. This includes exploring multiple options for augmenting our water supply during times of shortages, offering meaningful community conservation programs, and implementing new recycled water projects.

Water is a precious resource year round. Please continue to monitor usage and take steps to save water.

More data regarding our water supply, reservoir levels, and recent rainfall can always be found at marinwater.org/water-watch.
