Changes to Fundraisers

During a recent Minnesota Department of Education review, we were informed of small but important changes we need to make to comply with the USDA Smart Snacks Standards.
Smart Snacks Standards are put forth by the federal government, and are required for all foods and beverages sold outside of the National School Lunch Program.

To comply with the Smart Snacks Standards, TCGIS Administration has made the decision to implement the following protocol for fundraising immediately:
  1. The Office must be informed of all on-site fundraisers at least two weeks in advance via the Event Request Form. Once your event request is reviewed, an Office staff member will be in touch to discuss guidelines, instructions, and potential set-up requirements.
  2. Food and/or beverage sales may only take place after 3:45pm on school days, or any time during non-school days (e.g.: parent-teacher conference days).
  3. Upon approval, non-food fundraisers are still able to begin immediately after dismissal at 3:15pm. Please consider alternative fundraising ideas such as: selling seasonal arts & crafts, coupons for services (yardwork, car washing, etc.), or pledging donations for physical activity (running, jump roping, dancing, etc.).
If you have questions about the new fundraising protocol, please contact Maja Reyes at  [email protected] .
History Day Judges Needed

Grades 6-8 will be having their school History Day competition on March 1st. They have been working on these projects since October and we need judges to help make the big school competition happen.  Judging is a fantastic way to connect with students, support your community, and learn about history.  Read more   about   National History Day.  If interested in judging, or if you want more information, please contact Catie Jacobs at  [email protected] .
2nd Kinder Karneval at the Clubhaus!

Mark your calendars for January 28, 2018 from 2pm - 5pm! There will be a Kinder Karneval at The Klub Haus on Rice Street. Admission to the Kinder Karneval is free, families are encouraged to wear their favorite costumes and will have the opportunity to play a variety of games for all ages.

Winter Clothing Drive

Service Learning, a group of students doing service projects, would like to inform you that that we are having a Winter Clothing Drive. It started Tuesday, January 16 and will last until January 30, 2018.

Please donate any clothes, shoes, or hats and gloves you are willing to donate and put them in the boxes around the school labeled "Winter Clothing Drive" or give them to your children so that they can put it into the boxes.

Please make sure that clothes are clean before donating them.
Puzzlers Needed

Are you a puzzler? Do you enjoy creative word smithing? Do you have an acronym for remembering everything? Or do people laugh at your puns? Then we have a competition for you!

Currently our school has three behavior expectations: Sicherheit (Safety), Verantwortung (Responsibility), Respekt (Respect). We want you to come up with a catchphrase using each first letter of our 3 behavior expectations: S, V, R. Please submit your catchphrase to  [email protected] by  February 4. The winner will be announced at the Carnival of Cultures on  February 22nd. The winner will receive a $25 gift card for Amazon.

The example below may bring some inspiration! This example is from Wyoming
Elementary School in Forest Lake, Minnesota, notice their use and prominence of the school mascot.

Feel free to bring any ideas forward!

Thank you for your time and support,
The PBIS Leadership Team
African Drum Group Performance

On Wednesday, January 17, the Macalester Music Ensemble under the direction of Sowah Mensah brought an African Drum Group and guest dancer from Ghana to TCGIS to perform for our students in grades 4-8. The performance was very engaging and included singing, dancing and a lot of fabulous drumming! The $5 free-will donation is still requested if your student hasn't brought it to school yet!  Thank you.

All parents of 7th and 8th grade Drama students are invited to attend our performance during Specialist time on Tuesday, January 23  from 10:40 am - 12:25 pm in Room 100.

The program will include 3 poems by Goethe and their interpretations by the Drama students: Erlkönig, Heidenröslein, Gefunden. Also, students will perform their skits on topics they chose: Immigration, Native American Issues, Climate Change, Extinction of Animals, Gender Equality, and more.
Books Sponsored from the ZfA!

This past week TCGIS received around 170 books sponsored from the ZfA or the Zentrale für Auslandsschulwesen. The books were chosen from the German teachers last year and will help students across all grade levels! We are very happy and thankful for another generosity from the ZfA which supports our students among others through 2 teachers at TCGIS (Julia Brueske and Beate Simon) and these books.
