The San Mateo Union High School District Board of Trustees invites you to attend a Board Meeting on Thursday, January 20. The closed session portion of the board meeting begins at 5 p.m. The Board will take public comments on closed session items at that time. The Board will then recess to Closed Session and return to Open Session at 7 p.m. via Zoom.
The Board Meeting will include presentations on the following topics of community interest:

SMUHSD to Hold Public Hearing at Thursday Board Meeting to Review Draft Maps to Transition to By-Trustee Area Board Elections
Members of the Public are Encouraged to Attend and Comment on Draft Maps
Board members in the San Mateo Union High School District are currently elected in “at-large” elections, where all board members are elected by voters throughout the entire school district. On February 25, 2021, the Board adopted Resolution No. 20-21-12, in response to a letter threatening to sue the District under the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA). SMUHSD intends to transition from at-large to by-trustee area Board elections, where each Board member must reside within the designated trustee area boundary, and is elected only by the voters in that trustee area. Voters would only vote for one seat on the school board.
Why should the California Voting Rights Act Matter to me?
- SMUHSD provides top tier public education to high school students who reside in the Cities of Foster City, San Mateo, Burlingame, Hillsborough, Millbrae and San Bruno. Approximately 9,000 students attend six highly-rated comprehensive high schools, a special Middle College program in conjunction with the College of San Mateo, an alternative/continuation high school, and a robust Adult School Program.
- The purpose of the California Voting Rights Act is to prevent an at-large election system from diluting minority voting power, and to protect the ability of minorities to influence the outcome of an election.
- Maps are drawn to balance the population of the District into five voting areas while enhancing minority voting rights.
- Once the District transitions to by-trustee area elections, trustees will only be elected by voters living with the same designated trustee area as they do.Trustee area elections also allow Board candidates to run in a smaller area, potentially lowering the cost and other barriers to candidates running for School Board.

- At these meetings, an expert demographer will present preliminary maps outlining potential new voting boundaries, with a target date of February 24 for the Board to approve the final map.

The District has made available draft maps and an interactive map where members of the public are able to view additional map information regarding SMUHSD, including the jurisdictional area of partner elementary school districts, city boundaries, census blocks, racial and income data, and more.

The Board will comment, and members of the public are encouraged to attend and make public comments on proposed maps and determine how boundaries are created
- These maps do not impact school attendance boundaries. They impact the areas from which voters will elect School Board trustees.
Board meetings are generally held at 7 p.m. though meeting times and dates are subject to change. Agendas and zoom information are posted on our website.

San Mateo Daily Journal: SMUHSD's Work-based Learning Program for Developmentally Disabled Restarts After Pandemic Pause
"With the return of in-person instruction across San Mateo County school districts, hands-on work-based learning programs for those with developmental disabilities have also returned, reigniting a mutually beneficial partnership for students and participating businesses.
“These programs build skills and confidence but really that’s toward their independence. It just makes these young adults know they can succeed,” Eli Poblitz, a transition specialist with San Mateo Union High School District’s Transition Partnership Program, said.

Washington Post: Geometry Before Algebra? Schools Will Try More New Angles in 2022
"Nearly every Hillsdale ninth-grader this year is in geometry. Some already took algebra in middle school; others have not taken it yet. Since geometry’s focus on properties of space is different from algebra’s study of symbols and their use, the Hillsdale faculty — veteran innovators — decided to make geometry a gathering place for freshmen. The school can then assess each student’s progress to help them choose what to take in math the rest of high school."

Capuchino's Hailey Hoff Named McDonald All-American Nominee
Big congratulations to Capuchino High School Basketball Player Hailey Hoff - she is a McDonald's All-American Nominee!
760 girls and boys high school basketball players from across the country have been nominated for a chance to play in the 45th anniversary McDonald’s All American Games.
The annual event returns this March, to showcase the nation’s rising stars who will go head-to-head at Wintrust Arena in Chicago.

Aragon High Musician Named to 2021-2022 YoungArts Award Recipient
YoungArts recently recognized 720 of the nation's most accomplished young artists in the visual, literary and performing arts and Aragon trumpet player Geoffrey Nelson was included in the Jazz Category.
YoungArts award winners are given opportunities for financial, creative and professional development support throughout their entire careers.
This year's YoungArts award winners at the Finalist level were invited to participate in National YoungArts Week in January 2022 featuring intensive virtual classes, workshops and mentorship from leading artists in their field, followed by nightly virtual performances and a public exhibition.

Two Burlingame Students Recognized by California Band Director Association
BHS Senior Johnny Willey is included as Lead Trumpet in the Jazz Band and BHS Junior Audrey Limb is included as Oboe in Wind Symphony. Both Johnny and Audrey have been selected as a member of the honor ensembles two years in a row.
Every year, thousands of students from all over California participate in the auditions.

Mills Lindsay Danehower Completes Sustainable and Climate Ready Schools Admin Fellowship
This knowledge to action fellowship focuses on successfully managing change through the development and implementation of a project that does one or more of the following:
- Greens one aspect of their school/district's facilities and operations, and utilizes these efforts in the curriculum as a laboratory for learning;
- Develops and implements a strategic plan for integrating environmental literacy into the curriculum and instruction for all students at every grade level;
- Supports a project that prepares the school/district to be Climate Ready in one focus area (high heat, floods, wildfires, trauma-informed practices for climate change, etc).
Every fellow submitted a written case study that captured their journey in the SCRS Admin Fellowship Program. Lindsay presented her case study in December about moving the school towards a goal of Zero Waste.

Hillsdale High School seniors Jessica Dean and Victoria Vanos were recently named Volleyball Players of the Year by the San Mateo Daily Journal.
"Hillsdale seniors Jessica Dean and Victoria Vanos were the best volleyball show in the county this season. The duo closed out a most prestigious stretch of school history in style, leading Hillsdale to its first-ever state championship match."

Frankie Corbett Continues to Climb the Badminton Ranks
At the Scottish Open 2021, Hillsdale High School's Francesca "Frankie" Corbett finished three rounds of Women’s Singles losing her final match to World Ranked #31 Line Kjaersfeldt of Denmark. As a result, Frankie's BWF World Ranking climbed 23 spots to number 230 and her Women’s Doubles world ranking moved up 3 spots to 130.
Francesca also recently competed in the 2021 Yonex USA Badminton National Adult Championship in Fremont, where she earned Fifth Place in Women’s Singles and she and her partner, Allison Lee, scored Bronze in Women’s Doubles. As a result, Frankie qualified for the USA National Team to compete in the 2022 Pan Am Male & Female Cup in February in Mexico. This is the event that will select the Pan Am team that will compete in the Thompson and Uber Cup 2022 in Thailand in May.

American Heart Association Recognizes SMUHSD for Workplace Health Achievement
The results of the American Heart Association 2021 Workplace Health Achievement Index were announced in December and SMUSHD achieved national Bronze Level recognition for taking significant steps to build a culture of health and well-being for their workforce.
SMUHSD is one of more than 450 organizations nationwide that completed the Index assessment this year, evaluating the time period of July 31, 2020 to June 30, 2021.

SamTrans Launches Pilot Program to Give Free Rides to Students Who Are Furthest From Opportunity
SamTrans, in partnership with the San Mateo County Office of Education, is launching a six-month pilot program to offer free fares to students who are furthest from opportunity.
SamTrans created passes for school districts to distribute to qualified students, giving passholders free rides on all SamTrans bus routes through June 2022, at which time a decision will be made as to whether to continue the pilot into the next school year.
All students that are classified as Socioeconomically Disadvantaged (SED) by the California Department of Education are qualified for the new SamTrans Youth Unlimited Pass. SED students include students that are eligible for the Free and Reduced-Price Meal program, students experiencing homelessness, foster-youth, migrant students, or students whose parents did not graduate high school.

Rebuilding Together Peninsula Offers Free Safety and Health Related Repairs
Rebuilding Together Peninsula provides safety and health-related repairs to local nonprofit facilities for FREE. Teams of volunteers from local companies, including skilled carpenters, plumbers and electricians donate their skills and experience to help nonprofits make their facility safer and more functional.
