Future Alumni: The story of Torontosaur: 30 Sleepless Teenagers. 3 Days. Toronto's Hot New E-Zine Is Born!

The very first class of the new Digital Futures undergraduate program at OCAD University launched a brand-new online magazine for Toronto-loving teens. Produced in 3 days, Torontosaur focuses on tech, culture, and life in the city.
Why produce a magazine in 3 days?

The Chair of the Digital Futures program at OCAD University, Tom Barker, believes the Digital Futures program is creating a new kind of multi-disciplinary Designer, what he calls an 'X' shaped Designer. Barker set out to prove his theory that the innovation cycle can be shortened to under 6 days. He challenged 30 first year students to create a magazine geared to teenagers. In fact, his students were able to create an online magazine in 3 days. Barker says "Each point of the X is an expertise; Art, Science, Design and Enterprise. The 'X-shaped Designer' acquires practical knowledge in each of these areas, but also learns to collaborate brilliantly with experts and industries in each of the four areas. Inventor Thomas Edison once said, it took him 60 days to become familiar enough with a field to innovate in it. By leveraging opportunities and knowledge in the digital domain, I believe that an X-shaped designer can get this innovation period down to just 6 days".

The Torontosaur project is unique because usually products designed for teenagers (teen magazines) are developed by a much older demographic. Torontosaur is a digital magazine produced by teens for teens. The Torontosaur team was joined by teenage consultants and numerous industry experts recruited by Linda Theron and James Gen Meers of KI Group Consulting including; Hamutal Dotan, Editor of The Torontoist, Shawn Micallef, Senior Editor and Co-Owner of Spacing Magazine, Matt Blackett, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Spacing Magazine, Benjamin Boles, Music Editor of Now Magazine, Edward Gajdel, iconic Canadian portrait photographer and Adil Dhalla, Co-Founder of MyCityLives.

Best of luck to this group of Future Alumni! We can't wait to see what else you have in the works.
