Today marks a day of peace, a dream Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted for all of us that is still underway. The 9/11 Tribute Center shares that dream. It has been our mission to educate future generations and promote peace.

As the New Year rolls in, so does the snow and frigid temperatures this winter! The 9/11 Tribute Center is kicking off 2015 with exciting and informative new exhibits and resources for teaching 9/11. Stay tuned this winter as they are all released!

Best wishes,

The Tribute family

DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.: A WISH FOR PEACE

In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., "I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear." Today we celebrate the life of one of the greatest leaders, teachers and speakers in all of American history. Dr. King was a symbol of hope and a guiding light for a divided nation under great tension and fury. Dr. King led the Civil Rights Movement with great force, and taught everyone for generations to come, much more than the definition of equality.

It was in 1963 when Dr. King organized the "March on Washington," delivering his famous speech, "I have a Dream." Just one year later, he would receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

Like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we wish for peace. MLK Day is a great moment to begin a year of meaning and service. Join the 9/11 Tribute Center volunteer program or refer a friend. Help us spread the word of peace through education.

"The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people." Share your 9/11 story with us and with visitors from all over the world. Sharing stories educates others so history does not repeat itself. Our guides are survivors, family members, rescue and recovery workers, or residents and workers of lower Manhattan who witnessed what no one should ever see on September 11, 2001. Let's continue Dr. King's mission to educate and promote peace.

     9/11 RESCUE DOGS

An officer from the NYPD K-9 Unit and his canine partner will give a presentation at the 9/11 Tribute Center on Sunday, February 15 at 3:00 pm.  The pair will demonstrate their partnership and the fascinating training that makes these dogs so effective.  This experienced German shepherd has been trained and certified to recover human remains, to locate missing people, and to help detectives after a burglary.  He also is undergoing training as a FEMA dog, so that if there is a disaster outside of New York City, he may be called upon to help.

During the recovery at the World Trade Center in 2001 and 2002, rescue dogs from the NYPD and from all over the country actively helped to search the site.  Other dogs played an important role as therapy dogs who brought comfort to the people facing the daunting task of examining the crevices and canyons on the 16-acres.

The 9/11 Tribute Center located at 120 Liberty Street across from 4 WTC has hosted this program every February during the same weekend that visitors are in town for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

This presentation is free and open to the public. Families are invited to attend the program, although no pets will be allowed.  To reserve a seat, please write to rsvp@tributewtc.org.

NEW 9/11 EDUCATION TOOLS, EXHIBITS & RESOURCES

2015 promises to be an extremely dynamic year for the 9/11 Tribute Center's Education department. After the summer release of new online materials for the classroom, "Teaching 9/11," many teachers have been inspired and communicated with us, sharing their classroom projects. Once again, we will honor and welcome teachers during our Teacher Award program, this February 26th. In preparation for this event, we currently are receiving exciting submissions from teachers nationwide. Tribute guides will be welcoming New York City school students in the winter and spring months both in our galleries and we have expanded our Distance Learning program, bringing our guides into classrooms across the nation through technology, allowing students to interact with survivors, family members, residents and rescue recovery workers.

In February, we will also launch two new online exhibits based on 9/11 Tribute Center's collection of oral histories. The first online exhibit explores the experience of being a survivor, both physical and emotional survival, and how this experience can deeply affect one's outlook on life, featuring many Tribute volunteers. Shortly thereafter, we will be releasing a second online exhibit about the art of crafting a personal story. The exhibit explores our work with the MOTH story telling organization and will feature presentations from many of our guides.

Visitors to Tribute, at the end of February, will be surprised to see the downstairs gallery transformed as a center for sharing our 9/11 stories. New exhibit units will provide a way for us to share a range of videos to our gallery visitors. A new presentation space is being created so that our guides can gather visitors to share their personal and poignant experiences in a meaningful and powerful exchange.
