Winter Schedule January 3 - June 30, 2017
Benefits of Restorative Yoga by Melissa Perehudoff
Restorative yoga is an excellent way to disconnect from the busy pace of daily life and nurture yourself on a very deep level. When you relax deeply, your muscles release, your blood pressure and stress hormone levels drop and your heart rate, breathing and brain waves slow down.
According to research, regularly quieting your mind and body may help you sleep better and reduce your anxiety.
Additional benefits of a restorative yoga practice include:
1. Releases muscle tension through gentle, prolonged stretching and by using props such as bolsters, blankets and blocks.
2. Provides a mini retreat from the busy pace of daily life and allows you to move at your natural rhythm and tempo.
3. Therapeutic effects for your heart, immune, digestive and hormonal systems.
4. Develops mindfulness and increases awareness of your breath, body, thoughts or emotions that may arise and pass in the present moment.
5. Prepares the mind and body for a seated meditation practice.
6. Helps you to lose weight, particularly subcutaneous fat. Yoga in general is helpful for weight loss because it reduces levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.
7. Gives you permission to relax completely and provides a time & place to rest.
8. Transforms your yoga mat into a sanctuary for self-exploration and contemplation.
9. Invites creativity by fostering a relaxed mind.
10. Reduces anxiety and allows you to experience a wonderful feeling of calm and well-being.
You can experience the benefits of restorative yoga by signing up for our Friday night restorative class or Melissa's restorative workshop on Sunday, January 8th at 9:30 am (details below).

The year 2016 departed with a very happy event: Danielle Hall and
Don Ciesielski (long standing KYH students and Board members) got married December 30th. The bride and groom were radiating among relatives in Canada and in France (through Skype) and loyal friends.
We wish them ALL THE HAPPINESS
Did you know that lentils are a protein powerhouse of the plant kingdom? Try this recipe for a warm winter salad.
Curried Lentil and Rice Salad
1 cup uncooked lentils
1 cup uncooked short grain brown rice
1 red pepper
½ cup green onion
6 dried apricots
1 cup fresh coriander
2 Tablespoons lemon juice
2 Tablespoons balsamic vinegar
½ tsp liquid honey
1 ½ tsp curry powder
½ tsp ground cumin
¼ cup good olive oil
Bring a large saucepan of salted water to a boil. Add lentils and boil gently uncovered for 5 min. Stir in rice and boil, until tender, about 20 minutes. Drain well. Put into bowl. Chop remaining salad ingredients. Prepare dressing and add to salad.
- Photographer/Videographer: We are in need of updated photos of our new garden, and general class/workshop photos. Also, KYH has a Youtube Channel which would love some new content added.
- Work Exchange:
We are in need of other yogis who would like to help out KYH and benefit from an arrangement of work exchange (Cleaning) for yoga classes.
We will consider students who have an established relationship (for example, three months with KYH), rather than newcomers to the studio.
If you are interested in any of these volunteer opportunities to enrich The Kelowna Yoga House Society, please speak to any Teacher. Thank You!
