The News

shirley2017janShirley Isola's beautiful scratchboard, "McClintok," won Best in Show in Richeson's annual "Animals, Birds, and Wildlife" competition.

The Judge's, Terry Stanley's, comments were posted on the website with each of the winners.  Here are the comments about Shirley's:

"Mastery is evident in every aspect of this artwork.  Composition, anatomy of the subject, perspective, and textures achieved with scratchboard are all spot-on.  "McClintok" caught my eye on the first run through of the finalists and I came back to it time after time.  This is simply a fantastic piece that continues to hold my attention and admiration."

All so very well deserved praise!

cathy2017janCathy Keil's in Style!

Check out the current issue of Style Magazine for a lovely interview-style article about Cathy Keil.  In addition to Cathy's interesting insights, there are photos of many of her pieces as well as a photo portrait of the artist at work!  Congratulations, Cathy!

paintout2017janJanuary Paint-Out

January's Paint-Out will be on Tuesday, January 17 and Tuesday, January 24 from 9 to noon at Village Green Park in El Dorado Hills by the library off Silva Valley Parkway.  Two weeks at the same location will provide opportunity for more study of the location and/or weather delay.  Click  here for photos, directions, and more information.  Hoping for good weather, but you never know this time of year, so if it's too cold, rainy or windy, the event is cancelled.  To be on the e-mail announcement list contact Vesla by e-mail -  vgreendwood1@aol.com.

mem2017janMembership Renewal Reminder

For those of you who haven't yet sent in your membership renewal for 2017, please do so.  We rely on your dues to pay our basic but necessary expenses such as insurance, rental for the Senior Center for our meetings, payment for our demonstrators, and so on.  We need you!  And at the same time, we need your ideas.  If you have any suggestions for PAA, please get them to one of the board members.

show2017janA Show to Enter

Every two years, St. John's Lutheran Church sponsors an art festival featuring works from artists throughout the northern California region and emphasizing spiritual and religious themes.

This year the theme is "Let The Spirit Sing!" and the art will be juried by noted Sacramento artist, Jerry Silva.  The show begins with a champagne reception, open to the public, on March 9 and will continue through March 19, 2017.

They accept work from all media and encourage participation from beginning artists, as well as well-seasoned ones.  Submissions will be accepted March 4 and 5.  For all the details, visit  stjohnslc.org/artfestival

Happy New Year, PAA!
Did everyone make a New Year's resolution to create more art?
2016 was another eventful year for PAA. We successfully celebrated our 50th National Mother Lode Show! (A big thank you to Lucia Rothgeb!) We had many wonderful presenters at our monthly meetings. (A big thank you to last year's Program Chair, Phil Lachapelle!) Many members enjoyed participating in our two Membership Shows. (Thanks to Julia Swain for all her hard work on those shows!) I want to also mention and thank Kaaren Poole for bringing us this newsletter throughout the year. It can be a challenging task, but it is greatly appreciated. And many thanks to all of our many behind the scenes volunteers! We couldn't do it without you.

As I look forward to PAA activities in 2017, I think of all the wonderful artists I have met through PAA. Cathy Keil (PAA's Vice President) said it very well in her interview in this month's Style Magazine: "Being part of this great group has given me lifelong friendships. We artists encourage one another, and we also critique each other's work - all the while sharing a wealth of ideas. There is a bond between us artists that doesn't exist anywhere else. I'm a better artist because of my friends." Nicely said, Cathy!

Looking forward to seeing everyone's creative efforts in 2017.
Linda Heath Clark
