Big Roll Out at the 20th Annual PEARL Conference in Newport Beach
Doug Powell, PEARL President

This years' conference in Newport Beach is going to be a special conference in many ways. One thing that will make this special is it's our 20th. Yes, it's been 20 years since PEARL started holding these conferences in 1997 as a way to bring industry leaders together to advance the electrical surplus equipment market. Our goal again this year is to help you connect and build relationships with others in this industry, and to help you broaden your knowledge base on equipment and the methods our industry uses for reconditioning electrical equipment.

Since our first conference in 1997, business owners have been discovering that this meeting and exchange of ideas with others in our industry has provided much benefit. Since then, the conference has grown, including others in our organizations, such as sales and technicians, and reaching out to sponsors and exhibitors who support our businesses. Over the years, PEARL has worked to make this conference a central gathering place for like-minded people in our industry; a place where there is a collaboration of ideas and continual learning. Although I wasn't present at our first conference in Denver, CO, we still have many members around who were. And because a 20th anniversary is a big milestone, we wanted to do something special to celebrate and make it memorable.  Unfortunately, I'm not able to reveal to you yet what it's going to be, but I do encourage everyone to be in attendance at our annual membership meeting, Thursday, April 6, 2-4 pm, for the official unveiling. I will say that this is big, and it is going to have a significant impact on PEARL and for our membership for years to come. Make sure your travel plans include arriving in time so you don't miss this important announcement!

Additionally, for those who are qualified to take the Level II Technician Certification exam, look for more news coming soon on how to prepare for the exam. PEARL is planning to offer the Level II exam in Newport Beach.

Please make plans now to join us on April 6-9, 2017 at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach California for the 20th Annual PEARL Electrical Safety, Reliability and Sustainability Conference & Exhibition. Plan to have your technicians in attendance to learn firsthand from industry subject matter experts.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all in April!

Sincerely,

a
Doug Powell, PEARL President

The Future of Lockout/Tagout: Is Zero Risk an Outdated Approach?
The control of hazardous energy in the workplace continues to be a challenge for many employers. According to OSHA, failure to control hazardous energy accounts for nearly 10 percent of the serious accidents in many industries. Workers servicing or maintaining machines or equipment can be seriously injured or killed if hazardous energy is not properly controlled.  READ MORE

Assessing Replacement of Electrical Systems
Replacement of electrical systems is a study of economics and risk. Factors including age, safety, reliability, efficiency, and energy costs must be weighed in conjunction with replacement costs and liability risk to formulate and prioritize upgrade plans. A comprehensive cost-benefit analysis study for each electrical subsystem will allow facilities to plan short-term and long-term expenditures for maintenance and upgrade programs for prudent facility reinvestments, replacements, and growth.  READ MORE

How Emotionally Intelligent People Handle Toxic People
Toxic people defy logic. Some are blissfully unaware of the negative impact that they have on those around them, and others seem to derive satisfaction from creating chaos and pushing other people's buttons. Either way, they create unnecessary complexity, strife, and worst of all stress.

Studies have long shown that stress can have a lasting, negative impact on the brain. Exposure to even a few days of stress compromises the effectiveness of neurons in the hippocampus-an important brain area responsible for reasoning and memory. Weeks of stress cause reversible damage to neuronal dendrites (the small "arms" that brain cells use to communicate with each other), and months of stress can permanently destroy neurons. Stress is a formidable threat to your success-when stress gets out of control, your brain and your performance suffer.   READ MORE
