Message From the Executive Director of SBCCOG
The South Bay Cities Council of Governments operates many programs including the South Bay Environmental Services Center, which provides this newsletter. Our biggest event of the year, the 18th Annual General Assembly will take place on Friday, February 24th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Juanita Millender-McDonald Community Center in Carson. This important event is one of the main venues where all of our members come together for networking and to learn about issues that will challenge cities.
The theme of this year's General Assembly is "Driving The South Bay's Digital Future". The program will explore how cities can leverage innovative technologies to increase their competitiveness in attracting and retaining businesses. Attendees will learn about the Internet of Things (IoT), Smart Homes, 24-hour city halls, telemedicine and more. Many of the technology applications which will be explored not only offer economic benefits but have the opportunity to help improve the way we live as well as the environment.

SoCalGas issued home heating safety tips and advice on how to keep natural gas bills low this winter. In Southern California, the heating season typically begins in November and can last through March. During these colder months, heating can account for more than half of natural gas bills.

How Does South Bay Travel Pal Calculate the Dollars Saved on the "My Statistics" Profile Page?
The calculation for dollars saved when you don't drive your vehicle is an idealized calculation based on the AAA cost of owning a car -- roughly $.566 per mile. Each mode has its own financial reward which South Bay Travel Pal breaks down in the following way: for every mile walked or biked, the calculation is $.566 in savings. Telework saves the same amount of money, $.566 per mile that would otherwise have been driven alone. Carpooling saves $.283 per mile, while Vanpooling saves $.471 per mile in comparison to driving alone. Transit equates to a savings of approximately $.116 per mile compared to driving alone.

Metropolitan Study Demonstrates Feasibility of Large-Scale Regional Recycling Water Program
A new study has confirmed the feasibility of a proposed large-scale project to treat and purify wastewater and distribute it to groundwater basins across the region through a collaboration between the Metropolitan Water District and the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County. The conclusion of the feasibility study paves the way for the next step-the construction of a demonstration facility, which could begin this summer.

Palos Verdes Businesses Alerted to New Mandatory Commercial Organic Waste Recycling (AB 1826) law
City of Rancho Palos Verdes is announcing the continued formal education and outreach efforts to prepare area businesses for California's recycling law. As of January 1, 2017, businesses, including commercial or public entities like schools, hospitals, stores, restaurants, industrial businesses, for-profit or nonprofit organizations, residential dwellings with 5 or more units*, and others must recycle their organic waste over time based on the amount and type of waste the business produces on a weekly basis, with full implementation realized in 2019.
