Dear Friends of the BABC,  
Welcome to the New Year! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season, and wish you all a prosperous and successful 2018. We at the BABC are moving onwards and upwards following the success of our 54th Annual BABC Christmas Luncheon. The ever popular event brought over 1000 of us and our guests together to celebrate this time honored tradition.  We'd like to thank each and every one of you who joined us and especially all of our VIP Sponsors and Prize Donors who make this event the most prestigious holiday gathering in San Francisco each year.  If you missed them last month, photos and video are here
We enter into the New Year with two flagship BABC events, both of which are not to be missed!
The first is our 28th Annual BABC Economic Forecast Luncheon, sponsored by ACCA USA and Vistra, and hosted by Squire Patton Boggs. Our panel of experts will share their thoughts on how local and global economic patterns may affect your business in 2018. We'll be presenting economic forecasts for the Bay Area and the global economy and their likely impact on the US and regional economies as a whole. This luncheon always sells out event so please be sure to book your tickets here and save the date: 31st January 2018.
Following on from this, on the 28th of February we have our 7th Annual "Funding, Exits and IPO's event at the Quadrus Center in Menlo Park. Please join us for an evening of lively and engaging discussion of the climate for venture investment, hear more about how things might work out for the technology community in 2018 and get a chance to ask questions our panel of venture capitalists. We will see how accurate their 2017 forecasts were and will try to pin them down to some 2018 predictions too.  This event also sells out quickly so book your tickets here.

From The Consul General's Desk

Dear Friends and Members of the BABC,

Happy New Year! I trust you all had a wonderful holiday season. I, for one, am excited to see some big developments as we move into 2018, specifically around what the UK's future relationship with the EU will ultimately look like.

You'll recall just before Christmas, the Prime Minister and the EU Commission announced sufficient progress in the first round of negotiations has been reached, enabling us to move onto the next phase of Brexit negotiations.

The announcement outlines progress made on three areas that were included in the first round of negotiations, specifically:
  • UK and EU citizens
  • A financial settlement
  • And an agreement on Northern Ireland border
Firstly, the deal we've struck on citizenship will guarantee the rights of more than 3 million EU citizens living in the UK and of a million UK citizens living in the EU. EU citizens living in the UK will have their rights enshrined in UK law and enforced by British courts. They will be able to go on living their lives as before.
We have also agreed a financial settlement that is fair to the British tax payer. It means that in future we will be able to invest more in our priorities at home such as housing, schools and the NHS.
In Northern Ireland we will guarantee there will be no hard border. And we will uphold the Belfast agreement. And in doing so we will continue to uphold the constitutional and economic integrity of the UK.

Grant Thornton - Questions about Tax Reform?

 The enactment of tax legislation,1 commonly referred to as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (the Act), on December 22, 2017 brings a sweeping overhaul of individual, business, and international taxes. The enactment of the Act on December 22, 2017 means that entities must record the tax effects of the Act in the interim and annual periods that include December 22, 2017. The existing guidance related to accounting for income taxes under ASC 740, Income Taxes, does not change as a result of the passage of the Act. This publication provides a summary of the requirements under ASC 740 for an enacted change in tax rates and tax law. For some entities, particularly multinationals, the effects of the changes may be complex. An entity should consult with a taxation specialist to ensure that it has a full understanding of how the applicable provisions will impact the amount and timing of its income tax obligations as well as its tax positions, in order to appropriately apply the existing accounting guidance for recognizing, measuring, presenting, and disclosing changes under the Act.
