Rabbi's Message
As a dedicated and ethnocentric Jew who loves Israel I received the news of Trump's declaration about our embassy in Israel with joy albeit with some apprehension. I agree with the outlook of some political columnists that the ultra-Orthodox presence in Jerusalem would pose a problem. They pose a problem to me here in LA!
I love Tel Aviv and would be just as happy with the embassy staying where it is surrounded by the beautiful young men and women expressing themselves in the aura and permissive atmosphere of the 21st C. Many Arabs and Israelis will die needlessly because of the pomposity of a few who are mired in an age long gone but never to be forgotten era.
Biblical history not withstanding, all of Israel is sanctified and a living and breathing monument of jurisprudence and very well thought out laws governing our society. With that as our standard bearer, figuratively the entire country of Israel is our embassy. Yes, Tel Aviv is the perfect city for our embassy. Ben Gurion would be proud. No more killings of our brothers and sisters and children. I believe staying in Tel Aviv for the time being, will go a long way in establishing a more peaceful atmosphere between Israel and the Arab states. I hope and pray I am right.

What happened today (12/6/17) was a symbolic move. Certainly an act of political bravery and moral courage. Thank you, President Trump for this and all else you've done- are doing- and will do. Recognizing, that not moving the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem has not brought "peace" to the region. This action on the part of the president gives credence to Israel's "right to exist". Israel is not "temporary" any longer. WOW! HISTORIC! Israel can claim it's rightful place in the league of nations. They belong. It's got to make your heart feel good.
Not Clinton, not Bush the elder, not Bush 43 and not Obama had what it takes to do the right thing. No, it won't make an iota of difference to the "resisters" among us. Nothing changes. We are a nation divided. Our president is not a politician. He doesn't act "presidential". But, what he is, is a New York street fighter who gets it done, HIS WAY. Aint nothin' gonna change that.

Review From The Pew
By Rabbi Jerry Cutler
The multi-talented Mike Burstyn's film, Azimuth, will soon have its official opening in Israel. Mike was our High Holiday cantor on the eve of the Yom Kippur War and then again, three years ago. Both times he answered an urgent call from me to officiate at a time of need. Both times he was there for us and excelled as a chazan. The following is my review of a film he directed in Israel. Hopefully, you will all get a chance to see it when it opens in the United States.
AZIMUTH
It's the end of the 1967 Six Day War. A wounded Egyptian lying in the Sinai sand with his dead comrades nearby. He gets up and begins his arduous trek over the hot sand looking for a secure and shady place to rest. He comes across a two-story abandoned UN outpost.
He climbs the stairs, a better location to detect if anyone approaches. He sees a jeep driven by an Israeli soldier chugging along emitting billows of smoke from its engine. It stops outside the burnt-out building.
The Egyptian, armed with his rifle, sets his sight on his sworn enemy. The Israeli spots his nemesis and makes a dash to the front entrance. The Egyptian, Sammy Sheik, and the Israeli, Liftach Klein, are both excellent as they try to carry out their appointed mission to kill the enemy.
Their backgrounds are the same. Each has been taught to love their God; each dedicated to eliminate the other; each, as told in a flashback, with a wife and children they hope to see grow in an aura of peace.
Mike Burstyn, a movie and singing star in Israel, wrote and directed his screenplay. Although starring in the immensely popular "Kuni Lemel" comedies in Israel, at 71 years old, this is his first directorial effort and it's a huge success. The action of the two arch enemies never abates and although at first you might favor one over the other, in Burstyn's capable hands, you root for both to survive.
The tension builds to a climax as the combatants equipped with bullets and grenades succeed in inflicting great bodily harm on the other.
The climax of Mr. Burstyn's eye-opening illuminating foray into the mid-East can be translated into a century old prayer between these two Biblical enemies of hope and tranquility descending on both peoples. Can it evolve into reality? Mr. Burstyn has high hopes. A viewing of Azimuth would be a great place to start.

The Greatest Showman Trailer
|
The Greatest Showman
I usually find large cast shows emulating circus fare, long and ultimately boring. "The Greatest Showman" is the exception. Using the nuances of the late 1900's and transplanting them into today's contemporary world with song and choreography was an inspiration. We have a movie with character - in fact, many characters loosely taken from the life of P.T. Barnum and with an important message that should resonate throughout the world. Hopefully.
Hugh Jackman as P.T. Barnum is at his singing and dancing best. His portrayal of the master showman has already garnered "Best Actor" nominations from many award voters including one from The Golden Globes.
Starting from nothing, Barnum puts together an unlikely group of entertainers hoping to attract the interest of a high-end audience.
His dreams are at odds with the parents of his wife, Charity, whose wealthy parents don't think much of his far-fetched dreams.
Zac Efron, as the wealthy Paul Carlyle, who eventually becomes Barnum's partner, fulfills all that is asked of him and then some. His singing, dancing and romancing acrobat Anne Wheeler portrayed by the exquisite Zandaya, is wonderful.
The beautiful Jenny Lind a major star in Europe is brought to America to star in Barnum's foray into legitimate theatre. Portrayed by Rebecca Ferguson she is a huge success and a thorn in Charity's side. Her acting is flawless and her singing of "Never Enough" dubbed by the incredible Lauren Allred (I don't know if she's related), is another highlight of the movie.
Directed by Michael Gracey and written by Johnny Bicks and Bill Condon with songs by La La Land's Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, "The Greatest Showman" doesn't waver nor spends time with frivolities.
It moves effortlessly as everyone involved rises to the occasion. And, as important, is the assemblage of people, men and women, with different shapes and sizes.
A woman (Keala Settle) sporting a beard and Tom Thumb (Sam Humphrey), the smallest man in the world are at the center of the action when the circus is threatened. Both are terrific.
The rest of the ensemble, all of whom sing and dance, are not only integral to the film, but highly entertaining as well. Aside from the entertainment value there is a message here.
Regardless of our differences and blind prejudices, it is possible that the day will come when the tall, the small, the beautiful and not so beautiful will sing and dance together with those of opposing views and maybe, just maybe patch up our differences. If not now, when?
Happy Holidays everyone and a sound and healthy 2018 to one and all.
