A New Year Means New Minimum Wages for Millions
But What's the Bottom Line?

On New Year's Day, 20 states and multiple cities adopted new minimum wages, affecting the lives of more than 5 million employees.

Some states made the change in an effort to keep up with the standard cost of living, while other increases were the result of legislative action and voter influence.

Many employers are now faced with the task of readjusting their company policies and prices, while keeping a close eye on tax adjustments and compliance concerns.

Drones Could Take Animated Films to New Heights

For many years, now, drones have been used to achieve breathtaking aerial shots, and more, for any number of film and television projects.

Animation would appear to be next on the list.

Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich recently devised a process to capture human motion more efficiently using two commercial drones and a laptop. This method, while not quite ready for prime time, is expected to reduce the complexity involved in typical motion capture projects. The result could revolutionize the way animated motion pictures are made.

Consistency is Key

Once a worker's classification has been established - employee or independent contractor - it is critical you continue to pay that person in the same fashion.

Media Managers: Do not pay someone as an employee (W2) one day because he or she is a grip, and the next day as an independent contractor (1099) because he or she shows up with a lighting truck.

Make your determinations at the beginning of each year and stick to them.

Uber Settles, But Misclassification Confusion Remains
Big Questions Left Unanswered

Earlier this month, a $1.3-million dollar Fair Labor Standards Act settlement was approved between gig outfit Uber and 5,200 drivers.

According to law firm Fisher Phillips, the agreement brings an end to the ride-sharing company's oldest outstanding misclassification suit nationwide.

But though the sun has set on this particular and far-reaching complaint, big questions about misclassification and the difference between contractors and  employees remain unanswered.

Meanwhile, the gig economy continues to grow.
Maslow Media Group has experience managing gig workers in a variety of industries.

We regularly protect clients from the misclassification of employees and independent contractors. And we can help you remain compliant.
