George H.W. Bush's Academy Connection
In December the country took a day to remember the life and accomplishments of our 41st President George H. W. Bush. On December 5, the Columbus Academy community also reflected on his family's contributions to the earliest years of Columbus Academy.
Samuel Prescott Bush, the grandfather of our 41st President and great-grandfather of our 43rd President, was one of the nine founders of Columbus Academy and served on the school's Board of Directors for its first three decades.

School News
Last spring, during a celebratory day for the seniors after their final classes, Columbus Academy's Class of 2018 surprised beloved upper school faculty member John Street with tickets to the Army-Navy football game because they knew it was on his bucket list (
watch video). Last month, John and his wife Maryanne, who oversees our middle school CASE program, enjoyed perfect weather for the 119th annual matchup at Lincol
n Financial Field in Philadelphia.
During an assembly before winter break, members of our maintenance, facilities and security crews were recognized in front of students for their integral roles in our school community. In addition, they joined our dining hall and landscaping teams at a catered breakfast hosted by the Development/Alumni Office.

Sports News
On December 14, Columbus Academy inducted Martha Ferger '02 as the 40th member of its Athletic Hall of Fame.
During her time playing for Coach Anne Horton, Martha was All-Ohio in field hockey and a Team MVP for both our field hockey and lacrosse squads. She helped our Vikings win three state field hockey titles as well as a lacrosse state championship and went on to win three national titles in field hockey at Wake Forest University. "Playing sports early in my life really played a large role in shaping the person I am today and I couldn't be more grateful," she said. "What an honor for me to be included in this distinguished group of individuals. I would like to thank all the people who supported me and encouraged me along the way."

Our wrestling squad swept a pair of recent home duals by beating St. Charles 30-6 and Beechcroft 30-12. And in mid-December, freshman Zara Syed became the first-ever Academy female to win a varsity wrestling match when she helped the team defeat Cristo Rey 39-30 (watch video)! On the hardwood, our varsity boys are 7-3 and ranked sixth in the region while our girls hoops squad is 3-5. In swimming, our girls are 3-1 and the AquaVike boys are undefeated in four dual meets. Our boys bowling team is 3-4 while our girls are 2-4. And in its initial varsity season, our ice hockey squad is off to a 9-4 start!
