Welcome to the
New Year
On December 12, members gathered at the spectacular home of Laurelyn Berger to welcome in the spirit of Christmas and enjoy each other's company! The weather was perfect so we got to luxuriate on the lovely terrace, enjoy the ocean view, and partake of the scrumptious feast that everyone shared. Please check out the Assistance League of Hawaii website for pictures of this wonderful event. MAHALO, Laurelyn, for being so generous in hosting the Christmas Social event (again!) and to all those who made the event a memorable one!
As we ring in the New Year, there is a lot in store for Assistance League of Hawaii. You can be an integral part by creating a new "New Year's resolution" to do your best in helping us move in the right direction to meet our goals. At the next Regular Meeting on January 9, we will be electing a new Nominating Committee to seek out our next year's leaders. Perhaps you would like to be in that group that will shape next year's activities and events! There is a lot of fun and camaraderie built when we actively volunteer to help with our organization.

First Meeting of New Year on January 9th
|
We are excited to announce that we will be starting out the New Year 2019 by having the Assistance League Hawaii Regular Meeting on
Wednesday, January 9, 2019
at the newly-renovated
Waikiki Elks Club, 2933 Kalakaua
. The Regular Meeting will begin at 10.30 AM with a "pupu" buffet lunch to follow.
The cost for this lunch is $30.00 which will include tax and gratuities, but cost could be less depending how many members are able to attend.
It will include:
* assorted finger sandwiches
* fresh fruit platter
* vegetable crudité platter with dressing
* chicken yakitori
* teriyaki beef skewers
* chow mein noodles
* brownies
* coffee and ice-tea and ice-water will be available

so we can inform the Elks Club in a timely manner. With the holidays coming up, we would highly recommend that you RSVP as soon as you can, so you don't forget!

Parking in the Elks Club lot is free for Elk's Club members with a decal on their car. For all others the cost is $5.00 per car. You will need to pay for parking at the desk and place a pass on your dashboard indicating payment. It is suggested that you carpool as much as possible. Let Helen know if you need help with carpool arrangements. Metered on-street parking is also available for up to 4 hours. Cost is $2.00 for 4 hours.

Prepare for the New Budget
|
| The Finance Committee will meet to prepare the Budget for 2019-2020 on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, in the O'hana room. Please consult with your committee as to your needs for next fiscal year. You may want to increase, keep the same, or decrease the amount of money in your annual budget. |

Operation Wildlife's Educational Message on Preservation Spreads to More Hawaii Schools
|
Lots of Christmas cheer for OWLs! Honokaa School students and staff on the Big Island of Hawaii held a Penny Drive for Operation WildLife (OWL) in appreciation of our program. We received a check from them for $145.00.
Palisades Elementary School's PPT teacher sent photos of biofacts and of Kathy Takemoto and Marge Fabre as they did the presentation. She sent it to our website and Facebook. We got many likes and great comments from the public.
262 students and adults were served by our program on Oahu during December.
Kathy and Marge went on the trip to Kona, which served a total of 638 students and adults.
The program has been presented to 2,037 individuals so far this 2018-2019 school year. We are proud of our program and all the OWLs who have helped so diligently to keep Hawaii's children informed on the fact that "extinction is forever"

New Books for Students and Libraries
|
|
Keeping with the holiday season, we donated books to the Kahauiki Village 2 preschool classrooms to be sure their libraries kept growing. Santa (Assistance League of Hawaii) also gave each child their very own book to keep. For the younger children, these included a variety of board books and for the older children these included book titles from Rudolph to Peppa Pig. Easy board books are always a welcomed donation for them, especially fairy tales.

Next in-Store Shopping Events at Target
|
Our next In-Store Shopping Event will be at Target in Kapolei on
Saturday, January 26
. We will be providing new school clothes for up to 150 students from Waipahu Elementary and Ma'ili Elementary Schools. Several of you have already told Nancy Sparacino that you will be able to help at the event.
The last two In-Store Shopping Events will take place on Saturday, February 9 and Saturday, February 23 at Target in Kapolei.

We Care Delivers Into the New Year
|
|
Pat Dixon, Vickie Fay, Mary Kay Junk, and Jane Winslow packed 275 layettes on 28 November. Pat and Jane delivered them to Kaiser Moanalua, Kapiolani Children's Medical Center, and Castle Hospital in December.
The Malama Bears arrived on Oahu in late December. The 850 bears will be packaged for delivery at 9:30 to 11:30 am on Monday, January 14 in Bert's Room at the Thrift Shop. Anyone who would like to help with the packaging please contact Jane at 285-5603.

Student volunteers from Farrington High School helped with our members kick off our Christmas season with product sorting and pricing.

Thrift Shop Sales Were Great
Thank you for responding to special pleas for help sent by Nancy Sparacino when we get overwhelmed. Several workers came in Monday, December 17 and Tuesday7, December 18. By Thursday opening on December 20, the bins were empty and things started looking "normal".
Then at closing time on Thursday - guess what???? The bins were again full. It never ends, and that is a good thing. More donations means more sales and funding for our programs.
The park continues to be clear of "housing units". The trial period of security guards was extended through January 2019.
A very nice lady (a medical doctor) came in on Thursday, December 20. She handed me two bags of donations and after I placed them in the bin, she gave me a quart size plastic bag containing a $20 bill, other bills and lots of coins. What a nice donation.
We have sold 98.4% of our huge Christmas stock. We generated a lot of holiday sales, so it was worth storing everything all year.
2018 was very successful for us and that was due to the hard work and dedication of all of you. Thank you very much.
