Alaska Comes in First at Work to Protect Kids from Tobacco


Reports show that tobacco prevention, and smoking cessation programs have reduced smoking among high school students by 43% in Alaska. Overall, findings also show that nationwide the U.S. has reduced smoking to record lows! Find out more at  


Additionally, The Growing Up Tobacco-Free (GUTF) in Alaska Project through RurAL CAP works with 23 Head Start communities in the promotion of tobacco prevention through education and awareness. Please visit the GUTF page at RurAL CAP's website for additional information.  

Early Learning Happenings in Alaska 

Wasilla, AK- The CCS Early Learning program received recognition from the director of the Office of Head Start, Dr. Deborah Bergeron. 

Nome, AK - Kawerak Head Start  received funding from the Rasmuson Foundation that will help modernize, and expand the local Head Start building.

Klukwan, AK - Preschool and kindergarten students shared their Tlingit language through a winter performance by singing  Daa sa iyateen Shi (What do you see?).

Utqiaġvik (Barrow), AK - Although the temperatures are freezing up top, children at Fred Ipalook Elementary are still playing hard at their school's indoor playground.

Alaska Awarded a PDG B-5 Grant!

Alaska is among 45 states and territories that were awarded a total of $250 million dollars through competitive grant from the Administration for Children and Families. You may read about the Preschool Development Grant Birth through Five (PDG B-5) program as well as find out which states received funding, and how much each award was here!
Early Literacy News
  • The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and PBS have announced that Alaska Public Media (AKPM) was awarded a grant to provide science and literary resources to young learners in under served areas.You may read a full story on this at Alaska Native News
  • This past December Sealaska Heritage held a sitting for Baby Raven Reads. There, young learners up to age 5 enjoyed a reading from books specific to the culture based program. Please read the article printed in the Juneau Empire for a full story.
