FAMILY LEARNING NIGHT ADULT ENGLISH INFORMATION SESSION: 1.15.19
Eden Prairie Schools Community Education is hosting an information session on options for adults in Eden Prairie to learn English. The information session will take place on Tuesday, January 15th from 5:45 to 8:00 p.m. at the Lower Campus Preschool building as part of the Family Learning Nights Program. This presentation will consist of various options for taking classes, answer commonly-asked questions about English classes, and give details about two new adult English classes starting for parents in Eden Prairie. Anyone interested in taking adult English classes can attend and pizza and childcare will be provided.
METRO SOUTH ABE TESTING DAYS: 1.16.19 & 1.17.19
Eden Prairie Schools Community Education and Metro South ABE are hosting two Enligh language assessment days on January 16th and 17th from 9:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Education Center, 8040 Mitchell Road in Eden Prairie. Testing is required to register for Metro South's English classes, including two new classes being held by Community Education and Metro South ABE for parents in Eden Prairie. Parents, grandparents, or other residents who are interested in taking English classes in beginning levels are encouraged to come. The test takes approximately two hours; after the assessment is completed, Metro South or Eden Prairie Schools staff will follow up with participants about appropriate class options based on their scores. MYHEALTH CHILDREN'S DENTAL CLINIC: 1.16.19
A low cost dental care clinic will be offered at 15 8th Avenue South in Hopkins on January 16th of this year. This clinic provides services for children from birth to age 26 years old and pregnant women. Services that are available are exams, x-rays, cleanings, fluoride, sealants, oral health education, fillings, crowns and extractions. Children's Dental accepts all forms of insurance and offers reduced cost care under an income based sliding fee scale. To set up an appointment, call 612-746-1530 and ask to have your appointment at the myHealth for teens and young adults location.
POWER OF 100 MEETING: 1.17.19
The next quarterly meeting of the Power of 100 Southwest ♥ Women Who Care group is Thursday, January 17th from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. (with networking and social time beginning at 6:00 p.m.) at the Hilton Garden Inn in Eden Prairie. Learn more about this group by visiting the Power of 100 webpage.
JANUARY COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT IMPACT COUNCIL MEETING: 1.24.19

CITY’S OUTDOOR WINTER BLAST CELEBRATION: 1.25.19
Embrace the north Friday, January 25th at this outdoor celebration filled with activities for all ages including sledding, skating, arts and crafts, outdoor games, snowshoeing, and bonfires. There will also be a DJ and food. The event is free and takes place at Staring Lake Park at 14800 Pioneer Trail from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m.
COMMUNITY EDUCATION’S ANNUAL WINTER WARM UP OPEN HOUSE: 1.26.19
Community Education is hosting its annual indoor Winter Warm Up event on Saturday, January 26th from 10:00 a.m. - noon at the Education Center (8040 Mitchell Road). This event, which is free and open to the public, will feature a wide variety of activities for kids including face painting, kindness activities and crafts, open gym with live music, a beach theme photo stop, Usborne book fair and the Tassel Cafe. Several local nonprofits and service providers will also be present to share resources with families.
BOARD BOOT CAMP: 1.30.19
The Eden Prairie Community Foundation in partnership with Flagship Bank and the City of Eden Prairie will be hosting a board boot camp to strengthen Eden Prairie's nonprofit organizations on Wednesday, January 30th from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the Heritage Rooms of the Eden Prairie City Center.
Learn about nonprofit board member roles and responsibilities including fiduciary, strategic, and ambassador duties. This training is professionally led and will have take-home manuals and guides. To register or learn more about this event visit Board Boot Camp.
UNDERSTANDING & ETHICALLY MANAGING CHALLENGING GERIATRIC BEHAVIOR: 1.30.19
Older adults often face mounting physical and emotional challenges brought on by the aging process that can result in challenging geriatric behaviors. Case managers, social workers, and nurses who regularly interact with this population experience these behaviors first hand. Being equipped with new tools and approaches to handle these behaviors can make all the difference for those serving seniors. In this workshop, participants will learn how to determine the best interventions for specific behaviors, identify differences between delirium, dementia and depression, and work with family caregivers to empower them with the best information. This class is led by Steven Atkinson, a board certified physician assistant specializing in geriatric internal medicine, and will be held on January 30th from 11:30 a.m to 1:00 p.m at the Hilton Garden Inn Eden Prairie. Social workers and Nurses will earn 1 hour free CEU credit.

FATHER AND DAUGHTER SWEETHEART DANCE: 2.2.19
Dad, dance the night away with your daughter(s) and enjoy an evening neither of you will ever forget! Girls ages 3-15 are invited to attend a special dinner and dance with dad (or other significant male figure). This event will take place on Saturday, February 2nd from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Eden Prairie City Center in the Garden Room. The cost is $36 per child and $39 per adult and includes dinner, dancing, photo of the couple, favors and a special valentine craft. ISLAMIC RESOURCE GROUP BRINGS KNOWLEDGE TO EDEN PRAIRIE
In today's world, people of all faiths are sensing the need to come together, learn more about each other, and share our commonalities while understanding our differences. The Islamic Resource Group feels like the key to understanding is education and dialogue and the organization's mission is to build bridges of understanding between Muslim Americans and the broader community. This nonprofit is a tax-exempt organization founded in 2001 based out of Saint Anthony, Minnesota and is made up of speakers that represent various professional, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds. Always wanted to learn more about Islam and Muslims? Three classes are being offered through Eden Prairie's Community Education and will be led by the Islamic Resource Group. The first class will be Minnesota Muslims Up Close and will give an exclusive insight into the lives and experiences of Minnesota Muslims from different cultural backgrounds. The second class, What You Always Wanted to Know about Islam and Muslims, will introduce basic terminology, demographics, practices, differences between religion and culture, and religious celebrations. The final class titled Women in Islam will talk about the common misconceptions regarding Muslim women and will explain gender equity in the spiritual, social, and economic aspect of life. Each class is $19 to attend and you can register on Community Education's webpage.
EDEN PRAIRIE LIBRARY CLOSURE
The Eden Prairie Library located at 565 Prairie Center Dr. will be closed starting January 7th through fall 2019 for remodel. The renovation will offer increased space and support to patrons for hands-on learning, designated collaborative spaces and areas for quiet study, as well as electrical updates and improvements to the parking lot and steps. While the library is closed, holds pickup and a book drop for returns will be available at 479 Prairie Center Dr. in Eden Prairie.
HOST HOMES COMMUNITY FORUM DISCUSSION: 1.24.19
Please help spread the word to colleagues and friends about PROP and Community Education's Host Homes informational session on the new program for Eden Prairie families from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 24th in the Cambria Room of the Eden Prairie Community Center, 16700 Valley View Road. This informational session will bring awareness to Avenues for Homeless Youth and provide the benefits of structural support and trainings for host families and students as well as a focus on homeless students at Eden Prairie High School. RECYCLE YOUR USED MARKERS
Eden Prairie Early Childhood collects used markers from classrooms to help kids understand the importance of their role in protecting the environment. You can contribute too! Bring your used markers-any brand-from home and drop them off at the office at Eden Prairie Little Eagles Preschool at 8100 School Road or The Education Center at 8040 Mitchell Road.
ROYAL CREDIT UNION OFFERS STUDENTS A GLIMPSE AT REALITY
Royal Credit Union, in collaboration with Eden Prairie High School and 90 volunteers from the community and local businesses, came together to offer the Test Drive...Next Stop Reality event on Thursday, December 13th. This reality fair provided 325 EPHS seniors with the opportunity to explore their future careers and income possibilities and to gain a better understanding of some of the financial challenges that lie ahead of them. Another Test Drive...Next Stop Reality event will take place at EPHS on May 16th.
