Policy & Trends
Rethinking CTE Jan21

The Office of Career Technical and Adult Education (OCTAE) at the US Department of Education held a summit with a wide array of stakeholders (business, association, foundation, policy, state and local education leaders) to explore ways to build more effective collaboration with State and Local education agencies in "rethinking" CTE through the development of each State's Perkins V Plan. Over 125 stakeholders engaged in robust dialogue around the future of CTE and the questions that must be asked during the planning process. OCTAE will be hosting a series of topical webinars for state CTE directors and stakeholders throughout 2019. Materials from the Summit can be found  via this link.

They're investing to improve things like personalization and communication, and see a time when artificial intelligence will play a critical role in their business. These industries and others are adopting 10 leading disruptive technologies expected to generate trillions in economic value in the decade ahead.  Download the report here.

Across America, manufacturing companies in desperate need of skilled labor are turning to a previously untapped pool -- high school students. The quickly growing trend is especially prevalent in Midwestern states where, though manufacturing is strong, companies are struggling to hire enough workers to maintain production levels. A report released this year by the Manufacturing Institute estimates 2.4 million manufacturing jobs will go unfilled in the next decade. The most difficult to fill are skilled jobs -- digital positions and advanced production. Because of technological advancements in the industry, many of these positions require different kinds of training than traditional manufacturing.  Follow this link to read more.

A study using recently released Current Population Survey microdata to estimate the earnings premium associated with professional certification and licenses finds that full-time manufacturing workers with a certification or license earn close to $200 more in median weekly earnings compared to those without. The author also finds that workers with no high school or college education receive a relatively larger increase in weekly earnings, compared to those with more advanced degrees.  Download the report here.

In the January 2, 2019 Wall Street Journal, Irving Wladawsky-Berger reflects on the World Bank's report, The Changing Nature of Work. For over 200 years, workers have worried about advancements in automation which may be seen as threatening their jobs. Accelerating in recent years, it has left many in the workforce unprepared to continue in their occupations. Citing the need for workers to be prepared over their work career to be able to adapt to the new skill requirements, the World Bank, recommends governments address three key areas; invest in human capital, enhance social protections and coverages, and upgrade taxation systems.  Download the World Bank report here.

Meet Mark Stevens- Veteran & CPT Certified Student

What better way to kick off the Community News section in 2019 than with a video produced by MSSC Center, Alabama Community College System, highlighting veteran and CPT Certified student, Mark Stevens.

Mark returned home with a skill set that was difficult to transition into a civilian career. As a result, Mark enrolled in evening welding classes at the Marshall Technical School in partnership with Snead State Community College.

In less than a year, Mark gained the skills needed and employment as a welder for a local company. Upon completion of his program, Mark will earn multiple certifications, including the Certified Production Technician (CPT) Certification. Click the video to hear his story!
