  WELCOME
Sangha means spiritual community, and it is treasured because without it awakening cannot be sustained."
Jack Kornfield,  After the Ecstasy, the Laundry

Sangha is one of the precious jewels of Buddhist practice, yet when new to a sangha, it can be difficult to meet others, learn what programs are offered, and feel a sense of belonging. The Welcoming Committee was formed to make this process easier, help newcomers feel welcome, and foster the experience of connection and community. Our intentions include having a diverse committee that will support a rich, inclusive sangha where all feel welcome and safe.

To give newcomers an overview of our sangha and its offerings, we've developed a brochure, Welcome to Triangle Insight.

We're also available to talk with you at the end of Wednesday sangha, and we're providing name tags for those open to wearing one. The name tags are reusable, and we'll keep them for you between meetings. These are just a few of our initiatives and ideas. As a new committee, our plans are a work in progress, and we're very interested in your suggestions, feedback, and questions.  Our members and our other initiatives are listed on our  web page . Please talk with one of us or email us at  [email protected] .

With shared commitment to the dharma, we hope our work will be of benefit to all who join us in this practice.

Mindful of Race:
A Residential Retreat

with Ruth King

We are pleased to bring Ruth King to the Triangle for her Mindful of Race Training in a residential retreat setting. This training  supports an engaged exploration of our racial conditioning through a mindful lens.  With mindfulness practice, we learn to stay present to what's true and what's difficult with a caring and wise heart as we investigate our "individual" and "collective" racial conditioning and "systemic" proliferation.

Ruth King is an international teacher in the Insight Meditation tradition, and an emotional wisdom author and life coach. She is on the Teacher's Council at Insight Meditation Community of Washington and Spirit Rock Meditation Center, and is the founder of Mindful Members Insight Meditation Community in Charlotte, NC.  For more information about Ruth and her trainings please go here.

Stay tuned for more information about the retreat and how to register as details become more available.  Space will be limited.  Also note that Ruth would like all of the participants to have read her new book, Mindful of Race, prior to the retreat.

Happiness and Joy on the Path
of Awakening

Sharon Beckman-Brindley & Nicola Redfern
May 28-June 2, 2019 | Hendersonville, NC

This Insight Dialogue retreat will be an experiential inquiry into the seven factors of awakening, with a particular focus on the importance of joy, both as a fruit of practice but also as the path itself. The Buddha's teachings often emphasize suffering, hunger, clinging and relinquishment, which can seem rather austere. What is the true place of joy on this path of awakening?

Insight Dialogue (ID) is an interpersonal meditation form, based in the Vipassana tradition. In ID, we extend our solitary meditation into a carefully guided practice of meditation in speaking and listening with others. This retreat will be an introduction to ID for some and an opportunity for others to deepen their practice. More information about Insight Dialogue can be found at  www.metta.org. The retreat will be held in Noble Silence except for the Insight Dialogue sessions. We will alternate periods of silent meditation practice, contemplation in dialogue, mindful movement and time in nature.

To Register, use this Link.

NOTE: An ongoing meditation/mindfulness practice and previous retreat experience is requested for participation in this retreat. If you have questions about the suitability of retreat for you, please email Nic at [email protected] or Sharon at  [email protected]

Spiritual Friends Groups

Having admirable people as friends, companions, and colleagues is actually the whole of the holy life.
~ The Buddha

The new year can be a time for reflection and renewal. Whatever our joys and sorrows, our hopes and fears, we can pause and reflect on our deepest intentions.

As Jack Kornfield writes in   After the Ecstasy, the Laundry, Becoming aware of intention is the key to awakening in moment-to-moment practice.... Without denying pain and injustice, we can also look for the secret beauty of others. Our spiritual practice can be this simple: to see with eyes of compassion and act with our wisest intention.... It is in opening to one another that our path is made whole."

Our spiritual friends groups offer a special opportunity to open, share, and find inspiration for our heart's intention. With the support and care of trusted spiritual friends, this intention will light our path as we journey together into the new year.

The KM-RA Coordinating Team of Sarah Tillis, Karen Ziegler, and Tamara Share expresses deep gratitude for the dedication of our sangha. May our Kalyana Mitta and Racial Affinity groups be of great benefit to all.

racaf

Members of our Racial Affinity groups continue to deepen self-awareness around issues of race in small, racially homogeneous groups that integrate the dharma into members' personal and collective exploration. Waking up to white supremacy and the ways we have internalized it is a painful process, and the acceptance we bring to each other, as well as our shared understanding of the dharma, helps us to heal and strive to act more constructively in the world.

To support this process, groups follow Triangle Insight's  Mindful Sharing Guidelines and  Ruth King's Guidelines for Cultural Affinity Groups  .

Racial Affinity group members share a commitment to racial equality and are guided by Ruth King's work, yet each group develops and evolves in its own way. At the moment, one of our established groups reports that they would love to welcome two new members. They have just begun reading and doing the practices in Resmaa Menakem's book:  My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies.

Another book many of us are reading now is  Radical Dharma: Talking Race, Love, and Liberation by Rev. angel Kyodo williams, Lama Rod Owens, and Jasmine Syeduallah. Additional information and resources are on the Racial Affinity Groups  web page.

If you're interested in joining a Racial Affinity group or would like more information, you are invited to contact Karen Ziegler, RA Coordinator, at  [email protected].

Our community began to form these groups after some of us attended a retreat with Ruth King, and she has a new book out called  Mindful of Race . She will be with us in March 2019 and will be doing a retreat with the same name. If you are interested in informal discussions of this book in the meantime, please email Karen.

Caring Circles
A Sangha Support Initiative

Caring Circles is a Triangle Insight program whose purpose is to connect community members needing temporary assistance with volunteers willing to provide help. Assistance can take as many forms as there is need, such as meals, rides, housework, lawn care or childcare.

This exchange pairs needed service with volunteers to match. If you wish be notified when another member needs and requests support, send an email to [email protected] asking to be added to the list of potential volunteers. Thereafter, you will receive email notifications of care requests. You decide if you can and want to respond to any request. There is no obligation on your part by signing up to receive these notifications.

You can find this information plus details on how to request support on the Shramadana webpage. You can also speak with Gordy Livermore, Mary Mudd or Howard Staab for more information.

The Shramadana Project
A Volunteer Initiative  of Triangle Insight

The Shramadana Project (SP) has been a volunteer initiative of the Triangle Insight Meditation Community that was organized to address some of the interests expressed within the sangha and for outreach to the community-at-large. Visit the SP website.

Mary Mudd has been the SP coordinator since its inception, and we would like to express our deep gratitude to her for her commitment and dedication to this work.  At our last meeting, Mary announced that she plans to step down, and the group looked at the question of whether the SP was going to be relevant in its current role given the anticipated changes in the governance structure of Triangle Insight.  You can review these minutes here as well as further information and minutes of these meetings on the SP page of our website.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES for COMMUNITY ACTIVITY may also be found on the webpage.
  • list of community organizations seeking volunteers to further their missions of nonviolence, racial and social equity, and supporting youth. If you know of other groups to add to this list, please send a note with their contact information to Mary Mudd.
  • Retreats/Workshops. Several of these events have been organized over the years, most recently the Insight Dialogue New Year's retreat in January with Phyllis Hicks as well one with Jeanne van Gemert and Ron Vereen in May. We recently participated with a collaborative group to bring Lama Rod Owens to the Triangle from Oct. 22 - 29, 2018 and will be planning two residential retreats this spring: Mindful Race with Ruth King, and a Memorial Day Weekend retreat with Jeanne van Gemert and Ron Vereen.

  • REAL Durham builds relationships across lines of privilege, race and class to improve economic stability for everyone. It uses a racial equity lens to connect those with and without privilege for the purpose of transferring power and better positioning those without privilege to achieve financial stability. Volunteer training is held several times a year - check out their website for more information.

Workshops Bein g O ffered
In response to our efforts to engage the Buddhist teachings around the issues of Racial Justice and Diversity, we would like to recommend the training opportunities available through  OARNC (Organizing Against Racism NC) as a first step in this investigation.

Eighteen  of us from Triangle Insight have already participated in these workshops and they come highly recommended, so you are encouraged to participate if interested.  If three or more attend an event from our sangha, you will each get a discount on the fee for being a part of the Triangle Insight Meditation Community.

TI  is contributing $500 to start a scholarship fund for this purpose, and the community is invited to join the initiative by contributing specifically to the scholarship fund. The fund will be available to support TI community members in attending OARNC or other similar trainings. The goal of this initiative is to help individuals and the community to deepen their understanding of the way that unexamined views of race limit the mind and human systems.

Scholarships will be available on a case by case basis to help supplement the cost of registration. To contribute now through PayPal, please donate Here.

OARNC offers two phases of training, and the latter trainings are designed to assist us in bringing this knowledge back to our community so as to guide us more skillfully in addressing these issues in Triangle Insight. Please visit their website by clicking on the link above for descriptions of these phases of training.

Please contact us at  [email protected] if you:
1) have any questions about this initiative
2) would like to be considered for a scholarship
3) want to contribute toward a scholarship, and
4) wish to be a part of the core group to discuss our plans after completing the trainings.

insightdialogue
The Practice of Insight Dialogue
at Triangle Insight
Insight Dialogue is an interpersonal meditation practice and is offered at Triangle Insight once monthly, usually on the fourth Wednesday of the month. It brings the mindfulness and tranquility of silent meditation directly into our experience with other people. The new website for Insight Dialogue is an excellent resource for learning more about the practice: www.metta.org

The evening begins with silent meditation practice, followed by gentle mindful movement, and then shifting into dyad practice where interpersonal mindfulness is explored with a partner in response to a contemplation that is offered. The dyad practice is optional so that anyone who chooses to remain in silent practice may do so, rather than shifting into dyad practice. One can investigate the guidance of the contemplation internally, noticing the moment by moment unfolding of internal experience. Also note that the ID practice goes from 6:30 to 8:30 PM to allow for more spaciousness and time for questions.  We hope you will be able to join us.
