Message from the Chair

Welcome to 2019!  I hope all had the opportunity to enjoy the holiday season.

We have a very interesting 2019 forming up.  We will be facing a Fall Federal election and a Spring Alberta Provincial election that could change the political landscape.  Major capital programs including Canadian Surface Combatant and Future Fighter are inching forward and new In-Service Support awards such as the Army’s C4ISR support contracts are in the process of being announced.  All of these will require a 100% Canadian offset component and a 15% Small to Medium Business component.  This is a great opportunity for small businesses.

One of the roles of WCDIA is to help prepare companies, especially small one that do not have the experience, participate in the Defence sector.  The ‘Getting in the Game’ workshops are one of the steps to help address this need. They have been very successful.  We are working on a program that will see addition workshops given in Northern Alberta in the first quarter and hopefully across all four western provinces over the next two years.

WCDIA also can help decipher the large number of innovation programs that exist and whether a program could potentially be useful to a member.  Eileen Ashmore provided a good overview of these programs at the December Coffee Club meeting.  These include programs such as BCIP, IDEaS and even some from industry such as Raytheon’s Cyber Challenge.

Speaking of Coffee Club meetings, thanks to Peraton for hosting the first Coffee Club meeting of 2019.   Their new facility looks great!  Hopefully they will be shortly adding some new traffic signs as they help convert RAAF F-18s to fly on the right-hand side!  We have open slots available if anyone would like to showcase their company to our membership.

If you have not already done so, please take a moment to renew your membership for the year.

Here’s to a very interesting and successful 2019!

A Message from the IDEaS Team

As you have likely heard from the Minister’s announcement of today (January 16 th , 2019) since the official launch of the Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS) program on April 9th, 2018, we have been busy issuing a number of challenges via Competitive Projects, Innovation Networks and Sandboxes Calls for Proposals. We have also been active in engaging stakeholders in forums across the country, seeking feedback from innovators and encouraging them to participate in all aspects of the program.

We have also had success in awarding funds to successful organizations who are now working towards their innovative solutions. We have finalized our contracting process for the first Call for Proposals for Competitive Projects, which has seen us award 160 contracts. As well, we are nearing the end of our first Call for Proposals for Innovation Networks on Advanced Materials, which will see our first micro-networks approved, and start working. Participants to the program will only increase as IDEaS issues more and more challenges over the coming months and years.

With that in mind, we wanted to take this opportunity to provide you with some important updates to our website that you may find of benefit to you and/or your stakeholders ( www.canada.ca/Defence-IDEas ):

  1. On our “Future Opportunities” page you will find that we have posted our program’s anticipated challenges and program of work for the next 4-5 months. Since the beginning of the program, we have wanted to make sure innovators have as much time to prepare as possible prior to a formal challenge being issued. We hope that by having our program of work available, you can all take advantage and start thinking about the next great ideas!
  2. We have strived to keep stakeholders informed about what is going on in IDEaS in a way that is open and transparent. As a result, we are posting our IDEaS recipients under the “Past Opportunities” page so that you can see all awards and selections that have been made since the program launch –this includes Competitive Projects and Innovation Networks Calls for Proposals #1. We expect that this information will be useful for you to understand what innovators are doing in all areas of IDEaS and to identify potential avenues for partnerships.
  3. To help inform and increase the ability of our stakeholders to communicate about IDEaS, we have added a separate presentation to our “Understanding IDEaS” page. We use it in our engagements at conferences/meetings and other forums, and we invite you to take a look or send on to someone who may not yet know about IDEaS!
  4. As you know, this summer we released a Request for Information for Sandboxes. We are pleased to say that we have drafted a response to all the great submissions we received and it is now posted on our “Past Opportunities” page under “Sandboxes”. We would again like to reiterate our thanks to everyone who participated in this process and look forward to the Sandboxes coming this year.

We are excited by the progress of IDEaS over the past few months and we hope that these resources will be of benefit to you. We look forward to continuing to build our network of valued stakeholders and innovators to take on the new opportunities coming this year!

Sincerely,

The IDEaS Team
