January 2019 - Seattle

Friendly Visitors for Seniors
Friend to Friend America

Date/Time: Ongoing

Location: Various Assisted Living, Adult Family and Group homes in the Greater Seattle area. Friend To Friend America matches volunteers in five Puget Sound counties: King, Kitsap, Pierce, Snohomish, and Thurston.

Many of the 60,000 elderly and disabled persons living in a 'Home' in the Puget Sound area never have a special visitor. Living away from family and friends, they feel isolated and lonely, which leads to further physical and mental deterioration. Many are discouraged and depressed and have lost their will to live. Visits by a caring friend add a dimension that enriches and make the lives of seniors more meaningful. Friend to Friend America links volunteers with elder friends to promote social and emotional wellness for those living in extended-care communities.

Ages: Families with children are welcome to volunteer.

Time Commitment: A minimum of two hours per month for a year.

MLK Day Projects
EarthCorps

Date/Time: Monday, January 21, 10am - 2pm

Location(s):
  • Kubota Garden Natural Area: Rainier Beach/South Seattle - click here for directions
  • Eastgate Park: Bellevue - click here for directions
Each year, EarthCorps leads more than 10,000 volunteers in environmental service projects in western Washington. While the exact tasks at hand vary, EarthCorps projects focus on improving the forests and parks in our local cities. Healthy and thriving forests are vital to our community because they absorb and naturally filter rain water, absorb toxins in the air, produce clean oxygen, provide living spaces for wildlife, and they create a place for people to connect with the outdoors. In order to help create healthy forests, we focus on removing aggressive weeds (like English Ivy or Himalayan Blackberry), maintaining areas where these weeds have been removed, and planting trees and shrubs during the rainy season. EarthCorps supplies gloves, tools, water, light refreshments, and volunteer education. EarthCorps will provide everything you need to know about tool use and safety, forest health, information on the park, and the importance of the work you'll be doing. No prior experience necessary, just come ready to learn something new!
Please bring:
  • Sturdy, closed-toe shoes (work boots, hiking boots, rubber boots, or tennis shoes)
  • Clothing that can (and will) get dirty
  • Long pants and long sleeves to help protect against prickly plants
  • Rain gear and warm layers (check the weather!)
  • Sack lunch and snacks
  • Full water bottle
  • Travel mug for tea/coffee
Ages: Volunteers of all ages are welcome. The work is typically geared towards adults and children ages 10 and up, but younger children are welcome to participate. Parents of younger children should expect to supervise their children. A parent, guardian, or responsible adult must accompany youth under the age of 14. All volunteers between the ages of 14 and 17 who are not with a parent or guardian must bring a completed and signed Youth Waiver  the day of the event.

Time Commitment: Four hours

800 Jefferson St, Suite 620

Full Life is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for elders and people with chronic or terminal illnesses and disabilities. We respect the dignity of our participants and provide for them with care and compassion. We are committed to the independence and well-being of all participants and to providing respite for caregivers. Full Life is working toward a future where adults with serious illnesses or disabilities can be supported in the community rather than living in isolation or needing to resort to institutional care.

Volunteers can get involved in a few ways:

Visit an Adult Day Health Center: Children and families are instrumental in bringing joy and intergenerational connections with seniors for a more holistic approach to community building. Play music, sing songs, bring an activity, or a talent to share! Our adult day health center senior programs run from 9am to noon. Visits typically last forty-five minutes to one and one-half hours.

Create a Caring Card: Creative, artistic, homemade cards for seniors provide a meaningful source of care and kindness. Cards are shared with clients who attend our adult day health centers, behavioral health wellness studios, residents in our memory care homes, and also participants in our ElderFriends program. Most of our clients/participants have a chronic illness and/or disability or are feeling socially isolated. Make either Get Well cards or Birthday cards:
  • Get Well card: Write a get-well message for a client who is out sick or not feeling their best.
  • Birthday card: Write a message like "Happy Birthday! I hope the next year is full of laughter and joy." Feel free to create a unique message. Please leave the recipient name blank, sign off with "Your friends at Full Life Care," and leave room for staff to sign the card. You can also add your name if you would like.
Ages: All ages are welcome to visit Full Life Care facilities when accompanied by an adult.
