News From Ms. Kaup
Happy New Year!
I hope everyone enjoyed some quality family time over the holidays. As we begin this New Year, we will also begin our start to a new adventure. As the district transitions into the new elementary school configuration, we will begin having discussions and events for our students to help ease some of their anxiety over the change. I will send home information about any activities. Right now we currently have two things that will take place / get started in the next two months:
  • Smith and Randall Principal visits to corresponding classrooms
  • Pen pal writing with another class from another building

You can help at home by doing the following:
  • Encourage your child to ask questions
  • Reassure them that they will be able to meet new friends while keeping the old friends. Someone from Virgil will be in their class.
  • Affirm their feelings while telling them that change is hard but it will all be okay
  • Have playdates lined up for your child with Virgil friends so they can feel reassured that those friendships will remain in place

I also invite you (parents/guardians) to check the district webpage under transition. There is a question and answer document that might answer questions you have as a parent. If there is a question you have that is not answered in the Q & A, I would be happy to try and answer them for you. Feel free to call or email me. If I do not have an immediate answer, I will find it out and get back to you.

I hope everyone's New Year brings happiness, good health, and welcome surprises.

News from the Library
How Many Scholastic Dollars Did We Earn at the Fall Scholastic Book Fair?
We earned $517.00 Scholastic Dollars to go toward purchasing books for Virgil students! When students take an AR book quiz on a book that they’ve read, they can pick out a free book, and those free books come directly from the book fairs’ Scholastic Dollar profits! We were also able to purchase 1 book for each Kindergarten and 1st Grade student, which they will be receiving as a present before the Holiday Break.

What Have the 4th, 5th, and 6th Grade Students Been Doing in Enrichment RTI?
The 4th and 5th Graders have been groups together this year, and we’ve been doing STEM projects! So far, these engineers in training have built catapults, bridges, airplanes, floating rafts, and after the Holiday Break they will be designing and building Earth -friendly Tiny Houses.

6th Grade Enrichment RTI with Miss Thomas has been in charge of leading Wednesday morning All School Meetings, with each week focusing on the character traits of the Positivity Project. They’ve been very creative, with each week having a skit performance, a student-made video, a unique greeting, and more!
Thank you to the Cortland High National Honor Society Elves for visiting us at Christmas. It's always fun when our alumni visit and bring their friends!
Virgil Elementary enjoyed a visit from the Cortland High Varsity Basketball Team at All-School Meeting on Wed. December 19th!
Dear Folks at Virgil School,
Thank you for your many food contributions. Please know that we at the food pantry give to local families who need them very much. Each one of you are so kind. You make me proud of all of you.
