January 2019 ~ Issue 23
Dear Evergreen Elementary Families,

We hope you have had a wonderful Winter Break with your families! We are looking forward to welcoming your children back to school on Monday, January 7th!

Please mark your calendars for a very important event! On Wednesday, February 20th from 6:00-7:15pm, Evergreen will be holding our annual Open House Showcase! You read that correctly folks... Open House will be held in February this year instead of the traditional May event. Please click on the video link below from Mrs. Hansen for more information about the event and the reason for this change. We are very excited about this event and hope all Evergreen families can attend!

We are still looking for a parent volunteer to run our Book Fair in April 2019. If you are interested, please contact Mrs. Hansen at jennifer_hansen@crpusd.org.
Construction Update

If you have driven by Evergreen over Winter Break, you may have noticed some construction activity on the grass behind the 4th and 5th grade G Wing. We are excited to announce that we will be receiving another large play structure for this area!

This fall, Waldo Rohnert Elementary (3rd-5th grades) combined with their sister school John Reed Elementary (TK-2nd grades) to have all of their students on one campus. This allows for Waldo Rohnert to become the new, permanent location for Technology High School in the 2019-2020 school year (THS is currently in it's last year on the Sonoma State University campus). Since high school students do not have a need for a play structure, our district staff have made it possible for the Waldo Rohnert play structure to be moved to Evergreen! We are so excited for our students to have a third play structure on our campus!

The area will be fully fenced for student safety while the construction is occurring. We are hoping that the play structure will be installed and finished by February (weather permitting).
Restorative Practices Family Corner
As we continue our journey with Restorative Practices, we thought it would be a good idea to have a dedicated "Family Corner" section in the Evergreen Express. In this section, we will post a "Question/Topic of the Month" to inspire restorative conversations with your families. A great place to have restorative conversations is around the dinner table.

January Question of the Month: "What is your favorite/best memory of us as a family?"

Good luck!
Evergreen Restorative Practices Parent Implementation Team
We are looking for Evergreen family members to serve on our Restorative Practices Parent Implementation Team. Since we are in our second year of implementing Restorative Practices at Evergreen, we would like to bring in a team of parents to further our efforts in this area.

In our end of the year survey last year, a handful of parents expressed interest in being a part of this team in the future. Mrs. Hansen will be reaching out to those parents in January, but we welcome any parents that would like to be involved. Our first meeting will be on Thursday, February 7 at 4:00pm, so please mark your calendar!

If you would like more information about Restorative Practices, or the Parent Implementation Team, please contact Mrs. Hansen at jennifer_hansen@crpusd.org or stop by the Evergreen office.

PTA Corner

Happy New Year Evergreen Families from your proud PTA! We are so excited to see what the new year will bring for all our students and can't wait to get started working with all our families to make this year amazing!

We had a great turn out and a lot of happy customers at our Annual Holiday Shop. All of the students that came were able to pick out some great and affordable present for their family and friends (and some fun stuff for themselves too!). We hope we will be able to bring it back next year. We could always use more volunteers and will try to work with everyone on how to make it even easier for families to help in the future. A great big THANK YOU to all the volunteers that were able to help us out this year.

Our Dine and Donate this month is January 15th at Mary's Pizza Shack in Rohnert Park. More information will be coming in the next few weeks. We hope you will be able to attend our first meeting of the new year on January 18th at 6:30 PM. As always, dinner and child care are provided.

Your PTA wishes you good health, happiness and prosperity in the New Year.

Amazon Smile

Who doesn't like free money? Amazon Smile is a great way to earn money for Evergreen Elementary. The AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price from your eligible AmazonSmile purchases. I'm sure many of you shop via Amazon as well, and all of those purchases can add up to a LOT of free money for our school!

Here's how you can sign up:
On your first visit to AmazonSmile (www.smile.amazon.com), you are prompted to select a charitable organization from our list of eligible organizations. Please select "Evergreen Elementary PTA" in Rohnert Park. In order for Evergreen to receive funding, you must logon to www.smile.amazon.com instead of the regular amazon.com website each time you shop at Amazon. Thank you for your support!
Safe Routes to School Program Report

During the month of September 2018, Evergreen teachers supported our Safe Routes to School program by surveying students on how they got to and from school on two different days of the week. Collecting this data gives us a sense of how students are travelling to and from school, and is one of the five program “E’s” – evaluation. Evaluating our Safe Routes to School program also helps our school and Sonoma County assess where to focus the other four E’s of Safe Routes to School: encouragement, education, enforcement, and engineering.
How Are Students Traveling to School at Evergreen?
At Evergreen, an average of 16% of students walk to and from school and about 4% bike or scooter to and from school. Therefore, about 20% of students use active transportation on a daily basis to get to or from school. A small percentage of students, 2%, take a bus to and from school and an average of 9% carpool to and from school; therefore about 11% of the student population uses alternative transportation to get to and from school. About 70% of students travel to/from school in single family vehicles.*

How do these numbers compare to where students live?
Based on GIS mapping conducted by the SRTS program in the 2016-2017 school year, 45 students (10%) live within a ¼ mile radius of the school, 91 students (21%) live within a ½ mile radius, 252 students (57%) live within a mile radius and 371 students (84%) live within a 2 mile radius.

The Difference We Can Make
On International Walk and Roll to School Day, 153 students (31%) walked or rolled to school – more than a third of our student population! It is great to see so many students using active transportation on our event days. If your family has not tried it yet – join us at our next walk/roll event. Hopefully our monthly walk/roll events inspire families to try walking or rolling to/from school on other days as well, whether it is from home, or from an alternative location anywhere from ¼-1 mile away from the school. There are so many benefits to eliminating or shortening single family vehicle trips: decreased traffic in the school zone, reduced emissions and better air quality, improved safety with more visible, educated travelers, and improved health and fresh air for our students. Carpooling or taking the bus are great alternatives as well.
*percentages do not total 100 due to averaging & rounding.
