Hello Sonoma County 4-H,
Can I just say, 4-H is amazing! Thanks for being a part of an amazing group of youth and adult volunteers. Our youth continue to push the boundaries of creativity, leadership and community service. In the last month our youth gave over 1000 lbs of food, made 450 sandwiches for the homeless, delivered over 200 items to the local animal shelters, provided over 100 gifts to local people, volunteered to feed at over 200 people at local shelters that serve hot meals and a group sewed pockets for suffering animals in Australia due to the fires. That is just a few of the ways that I have seen or heard about. Our youth are changing our community, our country and our world. Have you shared with others why our youth are so amazing? brag a little and bring new youth to the best organization! On to a great 2020,

University of California Cooperative Extension is looking for an energetic and detail-oriented 4-H Administrative Aide to support Sonoma County 4-H Youth Programs!

Starting salary up to $31.98/hour ($66,746/year), a cash allowance of $600/month, plus an additional $1.15/Hour bilingual premium, and a competitive total compensation package!

This position provides administrative support for a variety of programs, including the 4-H youth development and University of California Master Gardener programs.

4-H ChickenQue and Open House
Chicken Que is an open house to introduce the 4-H program to members of our community, as well as a significant fundraiser for the Sonoma County 4-H. In the past 5 years, the event has raised over $90,000 that goes directly to programs and projects. For 58 years, 4-H members and their families from all over the county have come together, rain or shine, to host the largest single day chicken BBQ west of the Mississippi! Our 4-H Clubs host interactive booths featuring the many projects their members are involved with. Please come out and be part of this wonderful event, enjoy good company and a good meal! Fun for the whole family!

Attention 2020 ChickenQue Reps
First, thank you to everyone who has stepped up to be a ChickenQue Rep for their club. We couldn’t do it without you! The ChickenQue committee is busily planning for the 59th Annual 4-H Open House and Chicken BBQ on May 3, 2020. We are excited and eager to share some positive changes and always welcome your suggestions. The t-shirt drawing contest flyer and poster contest flyer are available on the website. Please encourage your members to participate. The other flyers will be available soon and a packet will be given at the January CQ Rep meeting. Mark your calendars as the rep meetings are quickly approaching! Each club is required to send a rep to these meetings. Our goal is to make them quick and informative:

Poultry News
Cloverdale Citrus Fair UPDATE
Due to the current outbreak of virulent Newcastle disease in California, there will not be a live bird show at the Citrus Fair this year. However, poultry showmanship and egg classes will continue on Saturday, February 15th along with poultry proficiency demonstrations. Showmanship exhibitors will be eligible to qualify for Round Robin and State Fair.  Make sure to get your entries in soon! All small animal entries are due Friday, January 24th. Rules and entry forms can be found at  https://cloverdalecitrusfair.org/citrus-fair/competitions-contests/livestock/ .
Get your YQCA Certification completed!  A YQCA Certification course will be held at the Cloverdale Citrus Fair on Wednesday, January 15th at 6:00 pm in the Tea Room. Sign up at  http://yqca.org/ .

4-H Leadership Summit, January 25, Davis

State 4-H Field Day: May 30
The California 4-H State Field Day is the largest educational event for California 4-H youth members and adult 4-H volunteers. The event is intended to provide a culminating experience in public speaking, textiles, plant sciences, photography, interview skills, and entomology. This family-friendly event is for all ages to participate.  Link here.

Fashion Revue Workshop

Everyone created 35 kits on Friday, January 10, 2020, at the YAL Center. These kits were Personal Care Kits for homeless and displaced persons. For more information about this service project see https://ucanr.edu/sites/UC4-H/files/306910.pdf .


Did you know that Fashion Revue is not only for members that sew?
The Sonoma County Fashion Revue has many categories that do not require sewing! Do you create cosplay outfits? Do you like to make things out of duct tape ? Do you crochet or knit ? Do you create jewelry ? Do you like to shop for good deals on an outfit? Can you create with leather ? Do you like to personalize and embellish the clothing you buy? There is probably a category in Fashion Revue where you can show off your style and creativity!
 
The 2020 Fashion Revue will be April 4 . The entry categories are: Accessories, Bag Challenge, Embellished, Textile, Box Challenge, Consumer Science Purchased ($40 Limit), Cosplay Challenge, Traditional, and Vintage Challenge. The only categories that require membership in a Sewing Project are Traditional, Box, and Vintage. All other categories are open to all 4-H members.

Pouch Makers and their Extraordinary Animal Pouches that are being mailed to Australia
We made Flannel pouches to help baby and recovering animals displaced from the wild fires in Australia. I love marsupials and was so excited to help. I have learned to sew in 4-H and I am happy I get to help another continent! I am also making bat wraps for bats. They are little blankets with pillows that keep the bats warm and safe. Liberty E. 2020 California 4-H Camping Conference
April 3 - 5, 2020
Sly Park Environmental Center
Registration for the 2020 California 4-H Camping Conference— Think Outside…No Box Required — is now open! The weekend event takes place April 3-5 at Sly Park Environmental Education Center in Pollock Pines, about an hour east of Sacramento. The conference is designed for teens and adults who plan and run camp programs and are eager to learn and connect with others who share a passion for outdoor living and learning.
 
The conference fee is $190 and includes workshops and all program materials, lodging, and meals. Archery Certification is an additional $35. Register by February 14 and receive the early bird discount rate of $160.

Community Requests
A SANTA ROSA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IS LOOKING FOR 4-H STUDENTS who are interested in sharing their love for their farm animals, and can explain ways they help earn money. Lincoln Elementary School has 300+ students that will be participating in a ‘Read to Feed’ fundraiser for the Heifer Project; an organization that purchases farm animals to help feed and train families in poverty throughout the world. Since many of our students are also from low income families and have never seen live farm animals, we are very interested in making this project more real to them, with a visit or presentation from 4H students, who would be willing to their animals, and explain ways the animals can help families earn needed income. Students in each of our classes will attempt to raise enough money to donate chickens, rabbits, sheep, goats, and calves. If you would be interested in hearing more about our plans, and your students would be available to share during school hours, we would love to hear from you. Please call or text Vicki Fenske, the organizing teacher, at (707) 799-3887. For more information Heifer Foundation and our fundraiser, see their website at https://www.heifer.org/our-work/living-incomes.html . We all look forward to hearing more about why your animal(s) are so important to you.
