PALCUS is pleased to announce that Ilídio Pereira (FL) has been elected to the Board of Directors.

With a Portuguese population of almost 70,000, Florida will be well represented by Ilídio's energy and vision. We look forward to working with him as he engages with Florida's PALCUS members and the community at large.

PALCUS Joins the Conselho da Diáspora Portuguesa

PALCUS is excited to announce that it has been invited to become a "Membro de Ligação", or "Connection Member," of the Conselho da Diáspora Portuguesa.  The Conselho is a global network of individuals and organizations dedicated to driving awareness of the Portuguese culture and influence worldwide, and PALCUS is perfectly positioned to help with this effort in the United States.

As its core mission, the Conselho set the goal of establishing a network of influential Portuguese abroad in order to forg e valuable connections with Portugal's institutional and business spheres.

Ricard Tibbetts, Jr.:  How and Why I Learned Portuguese

Richard Tibbetts, Jr. was the first recipient of the Alexandre António DaCosta Simões Memorial Scholarship

"I could have learned any language. Spanish, Italian, French, German, etc. But I didn't. I chose Portuguese. Why?
I chose to pursue Portuguese because my maternal family is from Portugal, and I wanted to communicate with my grandmother who cannot speak English. In addition, I promised myself I would not graduate college without learning a language. Despite my familial connection, I was never taught Portuguese. As a child, my mother worked all day and did not have the time to teach me. Also, I was disinterested in learning foreign languages. That changed when I went to college."

Ambassador George E. Glass Op-Ed:
Joint Efforts and Shared Successes of the Transatlantic Partnership

"The aroma of roasting chestnuts, twinkling lights lining the Avenida da Liberdade, and cozy dinners with visiting family and friends - all of these things make this my favorite time of year in Portugal.  And as we enjoy the Christmas season and look towards the New Year, I want to express my sincerest gratitude to the Portuguese people and the Portuguese government for their commitment to our long-standing, transatlantic partnership.
On our many trips around the country this year - from Braga to Barrancos, from Sines to São Miguel - my wife Mary and I have experienced the warmth of the Portuguese people and the country's undeniable charm.  And we were particularly proud of making good on our promise to listen, identify areas of mutual interest, and take action - working closely with Portuguese partners to the first sister-park arrangement between the United States' North Cascades Park and the Peneda-Gerês National Park, as well as support reforestation efforts through the establishment of the first U.S.-Portugal Friendship Forest in the Pinhal de Leiria.  The official naming of the Ambassador's residence, as  Casa Carlucci, will also serve as a tribute to former Ambassador Frank Carlucci's work with former Prime Minister Mario Soares to secure support for Portugal's emerging democracy.  It's these types of joint efforts and shared successes that will continue to deepen our centuries-old friendship."

In addition, PALCUS is a member-driven non-profit organization that depends on membership dues and fundraising events to fund its operations.  Members of the all-volunteer board of directors donate their time and personal funds for travel, lodging and tickets to attend networking events and planning sessions so our administrative costs are relatively low but nonetheless critical to doing business on a daily basis.
