January 2020 Edition

Pastor's Ponderings...
Last Sunday in worship, I shared briefly about the “word for the year” handed out on gold stars on the first Sunday of 2019. I drew the word BOLD out of the basket and through the past year I ruminated on what that meant for me as pastor at Emmanuel and as a new resident in Prescott Valley. Being bold isn’t my natural default, I am a fairly cautious person, so I knew that I would have to step outside my comfort zone. Martin Luther wrote the following advice, “Sin boldly. But believe even more boldly in Christ, and rejoice.” I believe that we are called to love boldly as well and I think we have done a pretty good job of loving our neighbors this past year. As we move into 2020, I think the following quote by Neil Gaiman is a great New Year’s Wish for all of us…

I hope that in this year to come you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly you’re doing SOMETHING .

At our annual congregational meeting on January 26 th you will hear about our upcoming cottage meetings planned for February and March. At these meetings you will have an opportunity to share your hopes and dreams for Emmanuel. Our stewardship drive is January 5 th thru 19 th and we ask that you prayerfully consider how you can use your time, talents and resources to help make the ministry of Emmanuel Lutheran possible. I know that as we navigate this coming year, we are bound to make some mistakes, and in fact I hope that we do! Failure isn’t bad, it just means that we found out what doesn’t work and we have learned something new! We know that God is with us, for us and loves us unconditionally, and that is the best news ever!

Yours in Christ,
Pastor Tricia
But Jesus looked at them and said,
“For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.”
Matthew 19:26

Its volunteers provide non-medical assistance to adults who are no longer able to drive due to age-related and physical limitations, in order for them to continue living in their own communities and in their own homes or independent-living apartments.

Find out more about People Who Care by clicking HERE . During January, you can make a contribution to People Who Care through the monthly outreach, and if the project is close to your heart, you may learn more and volunteer.
Stewardship Corner
Offering envelopes for 2020 are available on table in the narthex. Remember, even if you give electronically, you still have assigned envelopes in order to have an envelope number.

Our Stewardship Campaign kicks off this week! A letter and covenant/commitment cards have been mailed; please prayerfully consider your response, complete and return the church portion on or before Sunday, January 19th.

A Note from the Nominating Committee
We believe that the Spirit works through our members to raise up new leaders. We have positions on the executive committee, church council, Synod Assembly delegates, and several other standing committees to fill.  One position we are seeking is Treasurer, and we are looking for someone who is comfortable dealing with facts and figures.  Nomination forms are on the table in the narthex —nominate yourself or another; their permission is not required—we’ll vote at our Annual Meeting!
Join Dr. Dan Streeter January 15!
Our guest speaker will be Dan Streeter, Superintendent of Humboldt Unified School District. Carole Rebholz will be cooking and you know this will be a wonderful meal for $5.00—sign up in the narthex today!
