NYS Regents Exams Review and Schedule
This year, NYS Regents review will happen during
Learning Block (11:14 a.m. to 11:44 a.m).
Learning Block is review time built in the day for students to get extra support or enrichment from teachers. Depending on what each student needs, teachers request students to come to their classrooms. This year the NYS January Regents exams are from January 21st to January 24th. If your child is taking an exam please ensure they sleep well the night before, eat a good breakfast, and arrive to the exam early.

Science Olympiad News
The Science Olympiad team participated in an invitational meet at Fayetteville-Manlius on Saturday December 7th. Competing against 21 other schools. Only 7 students were able to go so hopefully more will be involved when we have our Regional Tournament at LeMoyne on January 25th.
Members of the team that competed were Liza Antonova, Zach Brafman, Samantha Engst-Mansilla, Alex Garrow, Rowan Harbin, Hellen Hunt, Jennifer Newman. Zach and Hellen were awarded 3rd place in the Solar Power Event. Alex Garrow was 5th in Ornithology, Rowan and Jennifer were 5th in Write it Do it!

Alumni Music Survey
The Cortland Enlarged City School District is studying its music program. We want to continue our fine traditions and make improvements for the future. 9th Grade Students Use Naviance to Plan Their Futures
The 9th grade students met with School Counselors during Learning Block prior to Thanksgiving Break to register their Naviance Accounts. All 10th grade students will be meeting with School Counselors during Learning Block December 10-12 to register their Naviance Accounts.
What is Naviance?
- Naviance is a web-based college and career program giving students the tools for self-discovery, career exploration, academic planning and college preparation.
- All students 9-12 have an account on the Naviance website (located on our school website with clear directions for login).
- We look forward to continuing to build career portfolios for our students.
- Seniors have access to scholarships through the Naviance website.

Staff Appreciation Week
Student council has declared the week of December 9th-13th to be Support Staff Appreciation Week. All week, the CHS Student Council students are performing service projects to show their appreciation for the people that make this building run.
On Monday, we showed appreciation to cafeteria staff by buying them lunch and staying to clean the cafeteria. On Tuesday, we showed appreciation to custodians by helping to clean up after school and getting the maintenance crew pizza. On Wednesday, we showed appreciation to the secretaries and IT staff through flower arrangements and an edible arrangement. On Thursday, we showed appreciation to bus drivers by getting them morning coffee and donuts.
Finally on Friday, we showed appreciation to all non-instructional staff by writing a personalized card to every staff member in the building, thanking them for their work!

Math Students Participate in BreakOutEdu Box
On December 18th, students participated in a breakout edu lesson for review on the topics "Definition of a Function" and "Graphing real world functions" ran by Mr. Levinton and Miss Kinsinger. In this lesson, students used the concept of functions and real world graphing to find combinations to 4 locks to open a box. The locks were composed of a 4 digit, 3 digit, word, and directional combo that the kids needed to find. The classes worked in 4 groups all using the same materials, and worked as a team to find all the combos. The premise of this lesson was for students to learn not only mathematical skills aligned with the common core standards, but to also build skills needed for them to work as a unified group to accomplish a task. The theme of the lesson was called "Alien Fuel Pod" where the students needed to solve the combos in order to save the Alien so they may travel to their home planet. The students had a lot of fun. Most found it very engaging, worked well together, and are asking for more days like this!"

Varsity Basketball
Makes Blankets
After school on December 18th, instead of hitting the courts and practicing their free throws, the Varsity basketball team was in the library making blankets out of fleece cloth to donate to the Child Advocacy Center.
Coach Jeremy Milligan said, “part of our basketball team’s mission statement is to provide service to our community. We wanted to take on this project along with serving food at Loaves and Fishes, and bell ringing at WalMart for the Salvation Army. The blankets will be donated to the Child Advocacy Center in Cortland. I think it’s important for teens to understand how good it feels to give back to the community they live in, and for many, have grown up in.”

New Math Electives Offered at CHS
We are excited to announce that two new math courses have been approved by the Board of Education to run for 2020-2021. Students will be able to enroll in Technical Math which is designed to meet the needs of seniors and juniors who are interested in technology programs. This course is a study of fundamental algebraic operations, linear equations, functions, applied geometry, trigonometry, and vector analysis.
The second new math elective will be titled Algebra 2R Honors and will fulfill the New York State course of Algebra 2 as well as cover TC3’s course MATH 120 College Algebra. Students will be able to earn college credit. Topics include linear, quadratic, absolute value, polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic expressions/equations/functions, function notation, graphing functions, transformations of functions, inverses, complex numbers, and linear, absolute value, and quadratic inequalities.

School Nurse
Conducts Physicals
Physicals for all 9th and 11th graders are underway. If your child has already had a physical recently please bring a copy to the nurses office. Flu season is also upon us. Some easy tips to help prevent the flu are: cover your cough, wash your hands often, avoid close contact with people who are sick and get plenty of rest.

String Orchestra Performance
Come hear the music of the String and Chamber Orchestras on Saturday, January 25th at 6:00 p.m. in the upstairs gym! Students have been practicing hard for this performance and are excited to share the songs they have been practicing with their families, staff and community members.

Auditorium Update
Progress on the construction of the auditorium is happening quickly! You will now notice that the roof is completed and the insulation and siding is going up. The fenced in area along the outside of the project has been decreased in size to allow for more accessibility. The inside of the auditorium is in the process of being painted. You can also check out

Public Speaking Class Hosts "Ted Talks"
Seniors in Melissa DaCosta’s Public Speaking classes hosted an event, modeled after TED talks, on December 18th and 19th in the Junior Senior High School Library. The popular, non-profit organization, TED, is best known for their short (18 minutes or less) and inspirational talks.
The students in the public speaking class presented their inspiration talks to an audience of students and faculty members. Talks ranged from students own experiences overcoming diversity, to the impact of social media.
