Honored Mentor: Dr. Karen Young
Share the Future and Honor a Mentor!
|
|
In honor of the individuals who have provided guidance and mentorship to veterinary clinical pathology trainees, the Share the Future (STF) Committee is inviting ASVCP community members to honor one (or several!) mentors. Inspired by a generous monetary contribution in honor of one great mentor in 2017, the STF Committee has developed this forum for ASVCP members to honor and thank the influential people who have helped us achieve our professional and personal goals.
|
|
The STF Committee is thrilled to announce that Dr. Karen Young has been honored by Drs. Julie Webb, Kristen Friedrichs, and Erica Behling-Kelly.
|
|
Dr. Julie Webb offers these words about her honored mentor, Dr. Karen Young:
"Karen has contributed more to clinical pathology and ASVCP than most of us ever will. She has taught over 2,500 veterinary students, mentored 20 clinical pathology trainees, authored 40 pathology book chapters, and published 40 pathology-related articles. All in addition to the numerous cytology and hematology cases read while on diagnostic service, a number I cannot even begin to estimate. She has also dedicated countless hours to editing
Veterinary Clinical Pathology
and advancing scientific writing in the veterinary field. I am lucky enough to have witnessed some of it first-hand while I was an instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 2008 to 2015. I came to Wisconsin for one year but stayed for seven, largely because there is no pathologist better to work with and learn from than Karen Young. "
|
|
If you would like to honor a mentor who has impacted your career, please share a message or story to express your thanks and convey why this mentor deserves special recognition. In addition to your stories, the STF Committee asks for a tax-deductible monetary donation (no minimum amount!). These donations will be used to help clinical pathology trainees by funding awards, research grants, externships, ASVCP Online Rounds, and travel to conferences. With your permission, your message(s) will be published in an
ASVCP News Blast
and on the Share the Future webpage. Please take this opportunity to honor someone who has made a positive impact on your own personal and professional development and to invest in the future of veterinary clinical pathology!

2019 ASVCP Pre-Meeting Workshop Highlights
|
|
The November 2019 ASVCP Pre-Meeting Workshop was held in San Antonio, Texas, as part of the ASVCP/ACVP Annual Meeting and was entitled “Diagnostic and Comparative Bone Marrow for the Clinical and Anatomic Pathologist.” The event was organized by ASVCP Immediate-Past-President, Kurt Zimmerman, and Executive Board Member, Laura Snyder, and had approximately
132
attendees. The success of the event can be attributed to its roster of great speakers Drs.
Anne Avery
(Colorado State University),
Dorothee Bienzle
(University of Guelph),
Joanne Messick
(Purdue University), Rose
Raskin
(Purdue University), and
Sa Wang
(University of Texas--MD Anderson Cancer Center). ASVCP offers its thanks and gratitude to each of these talented individuals. Audience members included clinical pathology trainees, board eligible and certified clinical pathologists, veterinary laboratory professionals, and anatomic pathologists, with employment ranging from academia to industry to diagnostic laboratory. The workshop provided trainees, and experienced pathologists alike, insights and confidence for tackling their next bone marrow submission. Thanks again to the presenters, organizers, and attendees for making the 2019 ASVCP Pre-Meeting Workshop such a success!
