 From the CEO

Hello, 2020!

Here's hoping you are kicking off the New Year on a high note.

TSS has closed the book on 2019, after finishing our remaining random drug testing during the final days of the year. I hope your company completed yours on time and with a good showing. It is important to start working on your random list when you receive it. Putting those collections off until the last minute places your business in jeopardy of missing one or more, which can result in a penalty from the Department of Transportation (DOT). TSS staff works the list each week, making calls to follow up on the information we receive and ensuring that collections do not fall through the cracks. Those calls are not required by the DOT, but we want to help you be successful in meeting your DOT requirements. You can avoid problems with the process by ensuring that you keep your eligible random pool up to date. Consortiums are easily managed when we all do our part and provide regular updates to those lists. When one person drops, we are mandated to notify the next person on the list. The random program generator makes all the selections, keeping the double-blind system in check, as required by the DOT. We all want this to be efficient and I am proud to say that together, we make a great team. I am grateful for that.

Did you know that you can view your company's drug screening results via our secure portal system? The Designated Employer Representative (DER) can be given access to look at test results as soon as they become available. Contact Operations Manager, Ginny Clay, for more information.

As we talk about new beginnings in 2020, I want to share with you that TSS is closing its Craig, AK location. We've had an office in Craig for more than 15 years and will miss being there daily. I've loved being part of the Craig community and providing an employment opportunity. However, ongoing difficulties with staffing the Craig office have made me realize that we can serve our local clients much more efficiently from our main office, where we are able to help any time, day or night. If you have questions or concerns about how this might impact your TSS service,
please contact us.

On a final note... If you are an employer who falls under Federal Motor Carriers Association, the FMCSA Clearinghouse is now live and mandated. Are you registered? TSS staff is prepared to assist you in getting your system up and running, as well as providing training to your staff about the requirements. Please call on us for assistance as this is a federally mandated registry. Don't get a ticket!

Best regards,

Renee Schofield
Consider Donating Blood This Month

January is National Blood Donor Month. As safety professionals, we here at TSS, have a pretty good idea of how often injuries and accidents can lead to someone needing blood. Not surprisingly, however, most people don't ever think about where blood comes from or the need to donate it. Did you know that only about three percent of age-eligible Americans give blood annually? Yet, according to the American Red Cross, someone in the U.S. needs blood every two seconds. Blood is essential for surgeries, cancer treatment and care for chronic illnesses and traumatic injuries. Whether a patient receives whole blood, red cells, platelets or plasma, this lifesaving care starts with one person making a donation.

CPR & AED Save Lives

Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at any time. Each year, more than 350,000 cardiac events occur outside a hospital setting. According to the American Heart Association, fewer than 10 percent of those victims will survive. Immediate Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and early defibrillation with an automated external defibrillator (AED) can more than double the chance of survival.

February is Heart Health Month. At TSS, we take that seriously! Each February, we put our AEDs on sale for the entire month. We also put our CPR classes on sale.

Updated prices are posted on our online course schedule and in our online store on February 1.  Also, watch for the discounted prices to come out in the February newsletter.

SAFETY CORNER: Forklift Safety

Forklift accidents account for approximately 85 deaths, 34,900 serious injuries, and 61,800 non-serious injuries each year in the United States, according to the government.

While OSHA requires employers to train their forklift drivers thoroughly, the training of employees who work around forklifts is sometimes overlooked.

Let's take a look at some safety tips for those who work near forklift traffic:
