"7 Billion Gifts and Counting"
That was the latest figure that the Santa Claus Tracker app showed for packages delivered to children all over the world on Christmas Eve.
In reviewing that figure I realized that Santa must have had some additional help and helpers (as in parents and family) to make all of those deliveries happen. In other words he could not have done all of that work by himself, even if that delivery number were true.
As is the case, all that has been accomplished in our city in the past year has occurred due to our many and hard working city employees. On Christmas day I found a picture on my phone of two city trucks plowing the newly fallen snow at 5 AM in the morning. And sure enough when I went outside, our city street had been plowed by a dedicated road crew on Christmas day.
As I got up Christmas morning, I reflected on how many blessings we have living here in Orem. We have clear and good tasting water, roads in good repair, working street lights, dedicated police and fire first responders that protect and help us in emergencies, good utility infrastructure that is up to date, great parks and a lot of them, fun recreational facilities, working sewer systems, storm water drainage systems, a wonderful library, fun swimming pools, good youth sports, a wonderful and well kept cemetery, beautiful lawns and grass in all of our parks, working stop lights, and good sidewalks, excellent garbage and recycle pickup programs, utility equipment and workers who are always out there keeping our city in good working order, and the many city employees in the background working hard to keep our city going.
I am amazed at the care and dedication that our many city employees put in to their jobs to make our city one that we can be proud of for a place to live, work, and play.
Years ago while building a pipe coating plant in Anaco, Venezuela I noticed that at the Caracas Airport that some of the sidewalks were chipped and broken, and that the streets to Anaco were full of rolls and bumps in the road where they had not been paved correctly. At the apartment I was staying at we had rolling electrical blackouts. We also had attempted break-ins to our rooms since the police patrol was not adequate to keep the city safe. Caracas is now facing rolling water blackouts for days at a time. And due to a very poor present government situation, there is inflation that is hard to believe. When I was there the exchange rate was 6 to 1 for Bolivars to Dollars. Now due to hyper inflation it is 45,000 to 1 for Bolivars to Dollars.
We have such a beautiful city in which to live. I hope that this next year if you get a chance please go out and thank the worker who picks up your trash. Wave to a policeman or fireman going by or stop and thank them for their work. Smile at and show appreciation to the crew cutting the lawn at the park near your kids' school. Thank the librarian the next time you see them. When you see a city truck, go up to them, and let them know that you appreciate their work and efforts to keep our city green and beautiful.
In other words let our city employees know how proud we are to be able to live in such a great place and thank them for their efforts.
As I quoted in the beginning it really does take a lot of helpers to deliver 7 billion Christmas packages. And it takes a lot of dedicated employees to help make our city such a peaceful, well run, and beautiful place to live.

Happy New Year!
As 2019 draws to an end, I take this opportunity to thank all of you for the various ways you make Orem a better place to live. Many of you have worked tirelessly to serve in your neighborhood, your families, and those you know could use a hand. Orem is consistently ranked in the top 15 places to live in America, and it is because of people like you!
As we close the chapter on our Centennial year, I pray that you and your family had a safe and enjoyable holiday season. I hope you were able to drive by and enjoy the lights at City Center. City Center wasn’t the only place in town to see beautiful lights. Many of you invested time and money into your properties to create winter wonderlands that were enjoyed by many, including me and my family! Many of those properties were given awards by the Orem Beautification Commission.
May this next year bring new happiness, new goals, new achievements and a lot of new inspirations on your life. Here's wishing you and yours all the joy of the season.

Rental Licensing & Utility Changes for Rental Properties
|
|
On December 10, the City Council adopted an ordinance requiring all residential properties to be licensed. In additional to this requirement, all City of Orem utilities will be required to remain in the name of the property owner. Both of these changes will be effective July 1, 2020; however, utilities can be put into the name of the owner at anytime. These changes will not impact the gas & electric bills. Utility bills can still be paid by tenants, and property managers will have access to the utility accounts. We have worked with many owners, tenants, and property managers to make this program simple to
Additional information will be mailed to all property owners, property management companies, and residents of Orem in the coming weeks.

Rancid Smell Update
Utah DEQ -
December 20th, 2019
|
|
Utah Department of Environmental Quality’s (DEQ) Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control (WMRC) asked U.S. Steel to temporarily terminate cleanup operations on the coal tar ponds ahead of a scheduled break for the holidays to address odor complaints from residents in the neighboring communities. During this hiatus from work, regulators from DEQ, along with U.S. Steel, will review operations at the site and revise work processes to better mitigate odors.
If you are looking for the short history of the "coal-tar-pond" cleanup (or just want to see pictures), the Utah Department of Environmental Quality has laid it all out on this web-page.

A New Approach to Anxiety and Depression
To become more educated about—and to better help respond to—the growing amount of anxiety, depression and suicide we’re seeing in the children and youth in our community, the City of Orem has partnered with the United Way of Utah County to become its first “EveryDay Strong City.” EveryDay Strong program is a community initiative to help children and youth to feel more safe, connected, and confident. The goal of the initiative is to help build more resilient kids and a stronger community.
This important initiative includes specialized training, activities for children, and a question and activity guide for adults. The City would like to encourage residents to complete the one hour, specialized training online
here
or in person at a upcoming training session at one of the local schools (see calendar for upcoming dates and locations). The Resilience Handbook can be downloaded
here.
