Mariah coordinates all aspects of events held at the Lodge, from giving site tours to newly engaged couples interested in holding a wedding, to directing their new trail running race, Back 9 Endurance. She started with the Lodge when she moved back to the area in May. Her husband was in the Army so they spent about 10 years living in different places of the United States, but the Keweenaw has always been their home! Mariah is excited as a new Board Member to represent Keweenaw County, the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge and to be involved in supporting our community to make it the best place it can be to work, live, play, and visit.

Penny Milkey,
Owner of NSH | Houghton, MI

Penny was born in Marquette. She moved to Lake Linden in 2008 with her husband and three beautiful children.
Penny and her husband Ryan purchased NSH in 2013. After a few years of purchasing NSH, Penny resigned from her teaching position at CLK in 2016 to help her husband, Ryan, run the business. Recently, NSH became the first licensed medical marijuana facility in the UP. NSH recently renewed its medical license and they hope to obtain an adult-use license in the future. Penny is excited to be involved with the Chamber Board and appreciates the opportunity to serve the community with resources and knowledge.

Member Spotlight:
Café Rosetta is a local institution for food, coffee and community in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula.

Run by people who love the Keweenaw! Café Rosetta is an independent, family-owned cafe located in the historic village of Calumet, Michigan. Whether you’re a hardy local or a visitor exploring this amazing area, we aim to fuel your Keweenaw adventure with the finest coffee and espresso, made-from-scratch meals, and plenty of inspiration for experiencing the wonder of Copper Country.

I have lived in the Keweenaw for most of my life, and never get tired of the freedom and solitude it offers. A twenty-minute car ride brings you to a spot on the shores of Lake Superior or a secluded hiking trail in the woods. Nobody around for miles—just you, the wild beauty of nature, and the people you choose to share it with.

Over the years and while traveling the country, I gained experience in coffee, and always hoped to one day run a coffee shop. A few years ago, I heard from a friend about a café going up for sale in our local village of Calumet. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to continue the legacy begun by the previous owners, while working with my family to create something of our own, that we could be proud of.

I’ve spent time in many cafés and coffee shops throughout the country, but only a few really stand out in my memory. These are the places where everything is delicious and everyone feels welcome, from everyday regulars to people who are just passing through. Since our opening of Café Rosetta in 2010, we’ve worked steadily toward the goal of being that place where every cup of coffee is exceptionally good and everyone who comes in the door feels welcome. Along the way, we have been lucky to work with employees who love what we do and take pride in creating this experience along with us.

In the end we hope to have created I am proud of having been able to create something that a lot of people really enjoy—an unpretentious and friendly gathering place where happy memories are made and adventures are planned over a cup of amazing coffee and delicious local food.

All of our menu items are prepared fresh daily with the finest natural ingredients locally sourced from neighboring farms. We are happy to offer gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan items on our menu, as well as in our daily selection of house-made soups and pastries.

Our sourcing partners include:
Byler Farms Eggs
Jim’s Trap Rock Greens
Calumet Farmer’s Market (Calumet, MI)
Mama’s Booch Kombucha (Iron River, MI)
Verns Cheese (Chilton , WI)
Frontier Co-op

Our drink menu features Kickapoo Coffee, a small-batch roaster in Viroqua, Wisconsin. We love the smooth flavor and hearty roast of their coffees, and share their values for a food system built on strong relationships with local farmers.
#FarmerFocused

We are community supporters through: my children attend the local schools and we enjoy sponsoring programs such as the High School Robotics team (CHS), Yearbook committee, Bike to School Events, PTA, Program Specials, Booster Club and teams.

We are also sponsor: CopperDog 150, the Great Bear Chase Ski Race, Swedetown Ski Trails, MainStreet Calumet events, Deer Chase Bike Race, Ride to Work Day, Aspirus Fitness Center and more!

We have enjoyed sponsoring and serving the Keweenaw National Historical Park, Youth Programs, Aspirus Hospital Recruiting, Fitness Center and Rehab Facility, Calumet Electronics and more.

We love to live and work here. Our families raise our children here and want to support our community by providing a safe, healthy and fun environment to grow! We are invested in the future of our community by recently purchasing the building and look forward to growth and stability in the future to sustain and protect the environment and community.

We enjoy and support the outdoors through employee membership/passes to Mount Ripley, Swedetwon Ski Trails and encourage camping, biking, rock picking in our beautiful Keweenaw. Our employees love and share these interests as well. We love to do what we do and love to share it with anyone also interested!

We have online ordering and our menu available at caferosetta.com

Our roots run deep in the Keweenaw
Upper Peninsula Power Company was created in 1947 through a merger of three utilities. One of them, the Houghton County Electric Light Company, earlier acquired the interests of Peninsula Electric Light and Power, which began operating in the Keweenaw in 1884 – just five years after Edison invented the light bulb.
From the Edison bulb to high-tech electronics of today, you might say UPPCO has been providing “ U.P. Power ” for more than 130 years.
