Did You Know?

The capital portion of Canada’s Defence budget is slated to grow from $4B/yr to $10B/yr over the next decade.

Government policy requires that 15% of this value be directed to Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

This means Defence contractors will be looking for up to $1.5B/yr of input from small companies. (Read that again!).

2020 Chairman's Letter

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The end of one year and the beginning of another is the perfect opportunity to look back over the past twelve months and reflect, as well as look towards the year to come. 2019 was a year of change for WCDIA, full of opportunity and growth, and 2020 promises to be even better. In this short report, I would like to share with you some of the highlights of 2019, as well as some of the activities coming up in 2020.

2019 had many highlights and we saw much movement in the organization. Chairman of the Board, Doug Brown concluded his term in Q2 of 2019 and Denean Tomlin also stepped away as President of the organization after 10 years at the helm, moving to Peraton as the ITB / Offsets Manager for Canada. Kacie Gavinchuk who was the Association Administrator and Project Manager stepped into to the role of Executive Director and will be leading the day to day activities, projects and events. Denean Tomlin stepped into the role as Interim Chairman until the AGM in 2020 where she will stand for election.

The immersive education workshop, “Getting in the Game” developed in 2018 by WCDIA Board members to assist small and medium business prepare for doing business with defence primes and ITB obligors, moved from pilot event to regular WCDIA programming after 4 successful workshops. Support funding has been secured by way of a Western Economic Diversification grant that will see multiple workshops take place a across the west over the next 2 years. Look for “Getting in the Game” workshops in Calgary in February, at Western Innovation Forum in Vancouver in March and Unmanned Canada in October.

In November at Unmanned Canada in Ottawa, Canada’s largest ITB investment in the realm of Unmanned Systems was announced. This project is made up of 4 WCDIA members (1 Defence Prime and 3 SMB’s), who all attended “Getting in the Game” in 2018 and 2019. A huge vote of confidence for all and real proof that good education and preparation is key to finding opportunities in the defence industry.

WCDIA is also continuing its work in the northern part of Alberta, supporting research and economic development activities in the Alberta Hub region for the purposes of attracting defence investment and ITB projects. We are very excited to see the plans and proposed developments that will serve to diversify Alberta’s economy and bring new and exciting opportunities from within the Aerospace and Defence industry to many sectors and companies.

WestDef 2019 was postponed due to the changes in the Board and Executive, it will be brought back in 2020. Stay tuned for programming and location.

In closing, WCDIA will continue its focus on education, networking and advocacy for our membership in 2020 with a full calendar of events and activities. With upcoming Board elections and new opportunities for committee work, we enter this decade with renewed leadership and enthusiasm. We know there are many associations and programs to assist industry with growth and diversity, we want to thank those that continue to support us and encourage those that are new to come and check out the Aerospace, Defence and Security industry opportunities that exist for Western companies now and in the future.

I wish you all the best in 2020 and look forward to connecting along the way.

Denean Tomlin
Chairman, WCDIA

On behalf of Western Economic Diversification (WD), we are inviting you to attend the 2020 Western Innovation Forum (WIF), and to participate in the B2B program. WIF 2020 promotes western Canadian capabilities in the aerospace, marine, and defence industries, and is organized in partnership with the Association of British Columbia Marine Industries (ABCMI) and the Aerospace Industry Association of Canada-Pacific (AIAC-P).

Along with presentations, panel sessions, and breakout information sessions on relevant topics by industry, government and academic leaders, a central component of WIF is WD’s  B2B meeting program , which will enable meaningful networking discussions amongst participants.
  • For more information and to register for WIF, please go to the WIF 2020 website.
  • For specific information on how to sign up for the WIF 2020 B2B program, please read and follow the instructions below.

Innovation Tour
For representatives of major defence contractors with existing or potential ITB obligations, there is the opportunity to participate in  WD’s Innovation Tour on   March 4, 2020 . This year’s tour will feature meetings with the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Marine Systems Initiative, and a visit to Simon Fraser University (SFU), which will include a tour of key facilities and discussion sessions with program staff from SFU and the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). Space is limited, so please  contact WD  as soon as possible to reserve your seat.

How to Sign Up for the B2B Program at WIF 2020
When you register for WIF 2020, you will receive an email containing important information on the B2B program. In the B2B information e-mail, you will be asked if you wish to participate in the B2B meeting program. Clicking the “submit a registration profile” link will take you to the B2B meeting platform, provided by B2B/2GO.
  • When you register on the B2B meeting platform, you will be given a choice of whether you wish to be a Host of B2B meetings or a Participant in B2B meetings.
  • If you are looking for industry capabilities or investment opportunities in skills development, research and development, etc. to put against your existing or potential ITB obligations, you will likely want to be a Host as WD will be able to match you with other WIF B2B participants that may have specific capabilities of interest to you.
  • If you are a top tier supplier, you must decide between Hosting a B2B table or being a Participant. The B2B platform cannot allow you to do both, but WIF 2020 will provide plentiful opportunities for networking to help you meet your business objectives outside of the formal B2B meeting program.
  • Once you are on the B2B/2GO platform, follow the instructions on how to complete your profile.

The B2B Program at WIF 2020
  • Western Economic Diversification Canada uses information provided by you in the B2B profile questionnaires to identify and recommend B2B meetings on the basis of correlation between what you tell us you are looking for as a Host, and what Participants have to offer.
