Thank you, 2019 Season of Giving Donors
|
|
As we approach the end of our 3
rd
annual
Season of Giving
fundraising campaign, we are amazed by the incredible response from our community. Together, we have raised a total of $139,450.00 USD, which includes the full matching gift of$50,000 USD from David and Cindy Higgins. These funds will help us to continue providing a 21st century education for middle and high school students, and quality educational programs and cultural experiences for local children and their families. We thank you for your partnership in this ongoing effort for a brighter future for Todos Santos and surrounding areas.
Fact:
In Mexico it is very rare that a school will provide full scholarships to it's students. The Palapa Society provides a unique opportunity to the youth of Todos Santos, by helping to make quality education accessible to any child who wants it.
The gift giving does not have to stop here. Help us to kick
off
2020 so that we can provide our educational services for years to come. Consider becoming a monthly or annual donor today. Simply click the button below to donate online, or email us at
info@palapasociety.org
to donate in-person. We look forward to your continued support!

Support Local Businesses that Support
The Palapa Society
|
|
Every year, we reach out to local businesses in Todos Santos, El Pescadero and Cerritos to become a Palapa Event sponsor. Sponsorship covers the costs of production for the event, which allows 100% of the ticket proceeds to go directly to The Palapa School, the Biblioteca Elena Poniatowska community library, the Beca (scholarship) program, the Puente (Bridge) to English program, and other community programs. We would like to thank the premier sponsors of the following events:
- Carrera de Todos Santos 5k Run, presented by La Esquina Café/Cuatro Vientos
- Open Studio Tour 2020, presented by Todos Santos Eco Adventures
- Historic Home Tour 2020, presented by Coldwell Banker Riveras
We are also truly grateful for the many businesses that have donated or contributed gifts in-kind this season. Please support the businesses represented by the logos at the end of this newsletter by becoming a loyal customer

The Joy of Giving
By Palapa Student: Evie C.
Young kids are learning the joy of giving while participating in the Biblioteca Elena Poniatowska Infantil Children’s Shoe Drive. Library Director Joy O’Brien’s target was 30 pairs of shoes, but she believes they will end up with about 165 pairs total.
For the past five Saturdays at Story Hour, 20-30 kids have been wrapping the shoes donated by many of our donors. The shoes are going to children who live in the Migrant Farm Worker’s camp in Pescadero. Joy created the drive based on the book “One Thousand Tracings” by Lita Judge. She felt that it was important for the kids to learn the gift of giving to someone else, especially around this time of year. I spent two Saturdays watching the kids wrap shoes.
It is inspiring to watch kids take part in an activity that benefits others. The gift of giving is a powerful thing to learn and the kids had a great opportunity to experience it.

Donna Schultz, Director of the Biblioteca Elena Poniatowska, was able to purchase 20 new titles thanks to the generosity of our patrons at the Best Seller Book Bonanza sale in December.
Watch for details for the upcoming used book sale in February, and the Saturday Night Fever dinner and dance party on March 21
st
to continue adding to the new book fund.
“We still rely heavily on used book donations but to be able to actually have current titles on our shelves make our 350 library cardholders—and me—very excited!”
- Donna Schultz

Art Education & The Palapa Society
|
|
For the last 6 years, local professional artists Jill Mollenhauer and Doug West have been leading the after school arts program for children in the community. In this classroom, students are developing motor and decision-making skills, while learning how to express themselves creatively.
This year, the class has evolved to learning the fundamentals of figure drawing and exploring new mediums. Last month’s project challenged the young artists to create ornaments from recycled materials, teaching students to take the time to be more careful and thorough in how they observe the world.

Congratulations to the over 170 participants in our annual Carrera de Todos Santos 5k Run. Together we warmed up in the plaza with 20 minutes of Zumba, led by our energetic instructors Jan Turner and Happy Brown.
Everyone who completed the race received a commemorative medal, and trophies were awarded to the top three runners, male and female. Top male runner Grant Williams of Todos Santos crossed the finish line first, with a time of 19 minutes, 26 seconds, followed closely by top female runner Yasmin Gajon Ojeda of La Paz with a time of 22 minutes, 7 seconds.
