The Landings Art Association invites you to the LAA/Sound View Gallery at the Palmetto Club from January 7 through January 28 to see the latest works by Artist of the Month, Tonnie Glick. Our monthly opening receptions are still on hold, however, the LAA art exhibits at the Palmetto Club Gallery continue to showcase the work of our very talented artists. What better reason to venture out of the house this winter.
Originally from Dearborn, Michigan, Tonnie moved to The Landings in 2004 after 30 years in Summit, New Jersey where she met her husband of 32 years, Mort Glick, at a Superbowl party.
In 1976 Tonnie was certified as a paramedic in NJ, earning the 12th certificate to be awarded in the state. She also completed her BSN in Nursing and for 17 years held two demanding jobs. She served as a nurse from 9-5, and trained paramedics in the evenings and on Saturdays. Her nursing career was in the emergency room, ICU, and rehab. One of her patients was Christopher Reeve, the actor perhaps most well-known for his role as Superman. She loved being around people and helping them and their families.
After Tonnie moved to The Landings, she took over the Welcome Service in 2007. Many of us know Tonnie as the first person to welcome us to the community, and she is still actively greeting people.
Tonnie has always been interested in the beauty of beads. After more than 20 years nursing as well as directing and teaching the NJ Paramedic Program, she began her new career in beading in 1998. She was particularly inspired by the ladies in the NJ Bead Society. “It was from these ladies that I learned technique and drew inspiration to allow me to create my own one-of-a-kind pieces of art.” She begins with an idea and colors and lets her creations take shape. Tonnie has been known to say, “I never know what it’s going to be until it grows up!” By this she means that each piece speaks to her in a different voice and proceeds in its own direction. She finds inspiration in the colors and textures of the beads themselves. She is well-known for her “Theme Bracelets” using cube beads to form a palette on which she creates scenes ranging from a garden fence with cascading flowers, to an African grassland, coral reef or even Noah’s Ark.
When Tonnie relocated to Savannah in 2004, she helped found the Coastal Beading Society, serving as its first president. The group still meets monthly with members from Georgia and South Carolina. She was honored in 2007 when her freeform gold and crystal collar won “Best in Show” at the Landings Art Association Spring Show. She was privileged to have also won First Place in Jewelry in 2012 and 2013, and honorable mention in 2008.
Currently Tonnie is beading large African mud cloths, creating animals and tribal costumes in beads.
