Staying Optimistic For 2021

Happy 2021, Brothers and Sisters,

The new year is still young, but 2021 is already off to a very encouraging start. In Washington, DC we now have a new, pro-worker administration. President Biden and Vice President Harris have made it very clear right out of the gate that they are committed to making life better for working families.

Just hours after his inauguration, Biden sent an ultimatum to Trump’s NLRB attorney: resign or be fired. When the rabidly anti-union Peter Robb refused to resign, Biden fired him that same day.

We also have a labor-friendly majority in the House and Senate for the first time in many years, giving us a chance at getting some real legislation passed that will protect Local 40 members along with the rest of America’s working families. Look no further than the new Labor Secretary Biden has nominated – Marty Walsh, a card-carrying member of Boston’s building trades (Laborers), and the current mayor of Boston. We’re all looking forward to working with Brother Walsh once he’s confirmed, and to seeing the real changes he will bring to the Department of Labor after years of neglect.

And let’s not forget that our own International President, Lonnie Stephenson, is on the president’s transition team, playing a major role in developing Biden’s climate change and clean energy policies so that those industries will put Americans back to work in good-paying jobs. Stephenson has served on Biden’s Climate Engagement Advisory Council that was established over the summer to help craft environmental policy that will help our members train for jobs of the future.

Closer to home, there’s good news on the pandemic front as well, with vaccines starting to roll out. As our members are essential workers, IBEW 40 is working with local authorities to ensure that our brothers and sisters can be among some of the first groups to get the vaccines. Stay tuned for more information.

We know that these are very difficult times, but please remember that your union has your back. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our offices if you need any assistance.

In solidarity,
