Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association: Working for the farmers and ranchers on Saskatchewan’s grasslands

The Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association was established in 2009 with the mandate to provide a united voice for the province's beef industry, with representation from all industry sectors and across all regions of the province. As a development commission, the SCA works to develop and promote the industry by investing levies collected through the sale of beef cattle in the province.

The SCA works for cattle producers through three routes: Communication, Advocacy, Research.

2020 has certainly been a year to remember. A primary focus early this year has been communicating food supply integrity to build trust with the public in the wake of COVID 19. Posts on social media and our radio ads about conservation and the benefits of cattle on the land were well received. Support and collaborations with organizations like the Prairie Conservation Action Plan and Ag in the Classroom remain a huge part of the SCA’s activities as we look towards the future. The SCA is now moving forward with what will be an exciting platform to promote all aspects of the cattle production industry. The acquisition of an inflatable dome projection system, with the assistance of the Province of Saskatchewan’s AAIP grant process, will allow us and our collaborative stakeholders a way of showcasing all aspects of the industry on subjects like conservation and animal care and in an amazing immersive film environment to students.

Beef producers do not work in a vacuum, just as prairie conservation does not exist in one, either. As such, the SCA appreciates working with partners such as the Prairie Conservation Action Plan, the South of the Divide Conservation Action Program, the Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association, and the Saskatchewan Forage Council by funding these organizations and sitting on their boards or committees. This has allowed our organization to better understand the needs of various parts of the industry, and work in concert to better move forward valuable efforts that can benefit us all.

Healthy prairie grasslands are essential to our farmers and ranchers, as many depend on them for the well being of their herds. The SCA has funded projects that provide more information on the most promising grazing practices, sulfate removal possibilities for remote areas, leafy spurge suppression, forage plant development, and best management practices to regenerate a forage stand after a fire. You can find more about those projects and others here: https://www.saskbeef.com/sca-industry-development-fund. We also welcome researchers to contact us to discuss their ideas.

Many events were cancelled this year due to the pandemic, but we look forward to restarting events such as the Saskatchewan Pasture Tour (held with the Government of Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Forage Council, and Ducks Unlimited), Agribition, our district meetings, and various other events meant to connect and improve our understanding on various topics, including healthy and productive grasslands in our province.

We welcome more opportunities to work with members of grassland conservation. Please reach out or visit our website at www.saskbeef.com.
